I Huskies add to domination
I By Ron Gullberg
Of (Im Knwrald
I In the aftermath of University
of Washington’s squeaky 19-13
win over Oregon Saturday, the
I Huskies' locker-room at
mosphere seemed to have a
"take the money and run" aura
I after the Huskies had beaten the
Ducks for the 11th time in the
last 12 years.
I "Every time they (Oregon)
play us it’s a tough game,"
Washington quarterback Hugh
IMillensaid. "We just wanted to
win today any way we could.
Then get on the bus and leave."
I Huskies' Coach Don James
met the press corps at the steps
leading up to his squad’s
I locker-room, and tried to wipe
a, "whew, thank God it’s over,”
look off his face.
"We always expect the Ducks
to* do that (give the Huskies a
scare) every time we play them.
They have confidence and this
is a big rivalry,” James said.
"I’m happy with the win. This
is a tough place to play."
Rivalry. That's the key word,
it sounded like a friendly fued
when James said the word.
But, when Washington safety
Tony Zackery said. "1 always
thought we would win. becapse
we're supposed to win,” head)
Oregon's Rob Marshall (77) puts pressure on Washingtdn
quarterback Hugh Millen (12) Saturday as the thicks defense
played one of its best games of the year. It wasn’t quite enough
however as the Ducks lost to the Huskies. 19-13.
■They’re the Dawgs." said
one unidentified Oregon fan
after the loss, sounding as if los
ing to "the 'Dawgs" was worse
than dating an Oregon St.
cheerleader. "Every time we get
some momentumn going and
think about the Rose Bowl, we
lose to the 'Dawgs." He then
stormed off.
t ;
■■■'■.
'We fust wanted to get the win today any
way we could. Then get on the bus and
leave.'
— Hugh Millen, Washington quarterback
dod support to Oregon fan’s
animosity for the Dawgs
Now. the Oregon-Oregon St.
"Civil War” game is a yearly
game for the state's bragging
rights, but that ever-evading
win from the Huskies in crunch
(Rose Bowl bound) time, has
blown the Oregon-Washington
series above-and-beyond the
"rivalry” point. And, each
year, Oregon's losses to
Washington become harder to
swallow.
“Well, does this look
familiar? We played a good
game, but just didn’t score more
points than they did.” Oregon
Coach Rich Brooks said.
But. on the other hand, the
Oregon defense did keep the
Huskies from scoring a lot of
points. " ;
Going into the match-up, on
ly lowly Louisville University
was behind the Ducks as the
Recycle This Paper
worst defensive unit in the na
tion. And. while a key punt
return by the Huskies in the
game’s final minutes proved to
be the Huskies’ final murder
weapon, the Oregon defense
held its ground much of the
game.
’’We played better defense
this week, but we still let them
out of the hole when we had
them In one,” Brooks said. * 1
"But when they got close to our
,end zone we toughened up
quite a bit/'
Oregon must find a way to
play as tenacious defense at
mid-field as they do inside their
own ten.
It's all hindsight now,
though. The fact is, the sneaky
.Huskies pulled another rabbit
out of their helmets, and left
Autien waving the Duck fan's
hearts in their fists, and dealt
. Oregon's mid-season Rose Bowl
dreams another set-back.
Only this time, Washington
wasn't supposed to win.
