Chinese, Oregon officials
agree to cultural exchange
Students and faculty
members from the Fujian Pro
vince of China and the Oregon t
State System of Higher Educa
tion will participate in a cross
cultural educational exchange
program designed to enhance
cooperation between the two
public institutions beginning
fall 1986.
The exchange program was
agreed to during a meeting of
Fujian and Oregon higher
education officials June 7. Li
Pu, Fujian Bureau of Higher
Education deputy director, and
William Davis, State System
chancellor, signed the
"Memorandum of Friendly
Cooperation in Higher Educa
tion," which outlines the
general format of the student
and faculty exchange.
The exchange agreement will
involve 15-20 Fujian students
and three Fujian faculty
• . members the first year, accor
ding to the agreement. The
number of students and pro
fessors from Oregon involved in
the exchange is still being,
negotiated, but at least three
faculty members from the state
will be involved, the agreement
stated.
The memorandum, which
came during an 11-day visit to
Oregon by a delegation of Fu:
jian officials, also calls for the
exchange of technical literature
and information.
The Fujian Bureau will send
three English speaking faculty
members to teach Chinese
literature. Chinese history, and
forest economics courses, the
agreement stated. The State
System will try to send three
faculty members to teach inter
national trade, industrial
management, and forest
economics.
According to the agreement,
the Fujian Bureau will also send
four young English langauge in
structors to Oregon, and the
State System will send four
young Chinese language in
structors of graduate students to
Fujian. The purpose of this ex
change is to improve the in
structors’ language facility.
The agreement calls for the
sending country to provide
transportation, tuition and fees,
and living expenses for
students. Faculty members
would have to pay for transpor
tation costs, but the host coun
try would be responsible for
providing a suitable living ar
rangement and an appropriate
living allowance for the
professors. .
Relationships will be set up
between the following pairs of
institutions: Fuzhou University
and the University of Oregon.
Fujian Teachers’ University and
Portland State University, Fu
jian Agricultural College and
Oregon State University, and
Fujian Forestry College and
Oregon State University.
