El mrT^fennai _ : )i a 1 1 1 sports A year in the sports world This year saw many disap pointments and many victories for Oregon athletes, including everything from a heartbreaking nosedive during the football season to the women's first na . tiona! track-and-field title. Here's a review of some of the year’s most memorable moments in the sports realm. Track champs If there ever was a year that Oregon women's track coach Tom Heinonen had reason to be excited about, it was 1985. The Ducks won their first NCAA championship, in Austin, Texas, with the best team that Heinonen has ever been able to assemble. The team came together in a twist of fate, winning the NorPac Conference title for the third consecutive year and went 7-0. in dual meets, bring their winning streak in that area tol4 • Six athletes -r- including five seniors — scored in Austin's heat and humidity. Seniors Leann Warren and Sally Har mon both came off two con secutive redshirt years to help the Ducks earn their, first na tional team title. Quanria Beasley came back from a red'-, shirt year in Florida to rejoin the' Ducks for her fifth- year.. The. Ducks’ .win .was definite- ■ ly a cooperative effort, as the team boasted four former na tional champions in Warren., Harmon.- Kathy ' Hayes and Claudette Grbenendaal: . Crbenendaal. .is the only woman who won an individual national title, as she won the 800-meters and finished second in the 1,500-meters. . • Harmon returned to Austin, where she won Oregon's first individual national title in 1981 . in the A1AW javelin. Warren, who was a three-time national champion in the 1.500 (1981,'1982.) arid 800 (1981). returned this year to score” valuable points in the same two races. After two years away from competition because of five separate knot- surgeries. Warren captured third in the 1,500 and fourth in the 800 in Austin. Hayes might have been the athlete of the meet for the Ducks as she finished a disappointing fifth in the 10,000-meters but came back in the next-to-last event — the 5,000-meters — to finish third and clinch the team A QUICK QUIZ 1. The other senior competitor for the Ducks was Beasley, who finished sixth in both the shot put and discus in Austin. Oregon’s only non-senior point scorer in Austin was [uniur Brenda Bushnell, who finished seventh in the 3.000-meters. Autzen sniping It was a cloudy morning in Eugene on Nov: 12. At about 8:30 a.m. in the weight room at Autzen Stadium, University student Michael Fehrer began a morning-long odyssey . that stolen from Anderson’s Spor ting floods at 4 that morning. At Autzen, Keher confronteti foot ball player Ray Wheatley and ordered him at gunpoint into the weight room within the stadium, where nine people from the University were gathered. The gunman asked to use a phone, then ordered everyone to the upper room of the weight area. Keher left and a-four-hour standoff between ;policu and the sniper began.
