Ducks need miracle in Austin By Allan l.azo IK Mm Kmarald It has been one year since the Oregon men's track-and-field team captured the NCAA track title in front of a delighted home crowd at Hayward field. But 12 months have passed and things will be markedly dif ferent when the Ducks compete in Austin. Texas. Wednesday for this year's national cham pionship meet The Ducks have qualified on ly eight men for the NCAA meet this year compared to last season's squad of 16. which in cluded loaquim Cruz, winner of the 800 and 1,500 national titles. Instead of gearing up for a big title defense. Oregon is realistically looking to finish anywhere from third to fifth. The Ducks have struggled to a 4-3 dual meet record and their national team is one of quality moire than quantity like last year. . ."We would.need a miracle to win it. and it wouldn't have anything to. do ow'ith us." "1 beat him (Gustafsson) last week, but now 1 have two Swedes on mo instead of just one. 1 think it's going to be a good competition, but I just have to go out and compete bet ter than I have ever competed before if 1 want to win.” >.
