Lakers clinch playoff series over Blazers 11985 Beer Brewed by Miller Brewing Company. Milwai I INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Earvin “Magic” Johnson had 34 points, 19 assists and nine rebounds Tuesday night as the Los Angeles Lakers clinched their National Basketball Association playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers with a 139-120 victory. The Lakers, who defeated the Trail Blazers four games to one, next face the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference finals, the last stepping stone to the NBA Championship Series. The Nuggets won their series against Utah 4-1 with a 116-104 victory Tuesday night. Johnson skillfully handled the Trail Blazers’ trapping defense that on Sunday m. wt forced 28 Los Angeles turnovers. The Lakers led the Trail Blazers from the se cond quarter on. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar added 25 points for the Lakers, and Bob McAdoo had 20. Jerome Kersey led the Portland scoring with 18 points, and Clyde Drexler and Darnell Valentine had 17 each. The Lakers put the game away with a 20-7 scoring spree in the third period that staked them to a 100-83 advantage going into the final 12 minutes. Page 8A Panel approves anti-bias bills SALEM (AP) — A Senate committee has approved four bills that stem from a sex discrimination lawsuit against the state's higher education system. Approved by the Education Committee on Monday, the bills were sought on behalf of women faculty members who said they were discriminated against in terms of pay, promo tion and tenure. Their suit, Penk vs. State Board of Higher Education, was decided in February when U.S. District Judge Helen Frye ruled that no pattern of sex discrimination exists at Oregon’s public colleges and universities. The bills were introduced at the request of Faculty Women for Excellence, a support group for the women college teachers who sued the state. After much reworking, the four bills approved Monday by the Education Committee would: •Establish uniform grievance procedures to be used at the state’s eight colleges and universities. •Order a study of how salary decisions are made in the State System of Higher Education. •Create formal evaluation procedures for administrators ranging from the chancellor to college presidents to depart ment heads. •Establish a joint interim task force to study the way Oregon’s higher education system is governed.
