letters Poor Fang I have a brown dog by the name of Fang. Fang’s two greatest pleasures in life are eating and walking. In order to make him happy and give him some much needed exercise, 1 have taken him to campus with me for the past three years. Fang is content to wait outside my class until it is finished and has never caused any trouble for campus security — until this past week. Apparently, some joker put a note in Fang’s collar while he was waiting outside Straub Hall for me on Tuesday, April 16. The content of the note implied that Fang was abandoned and needed someone to care for him. Imagine my surprise when my ever faithful dog was not in his usual spot and the sickness 1 felt when I could not find him anywhere. Luckily, 1 in tercepted the kind people who truly believed Fang was aban doned before they took him to the Humane Society, and after several minutes of explaining to them that I was not in fact a negligent owner and that 1 knew nothing of the note, 1 got my dog back. Thank you, you jerk, whoever you may be. Thanks for putting me through incredible torment as 1 searched for my dog. Thanks for worrying several well-meaning people who thought they had a homeless dog on their hands. Thanks for getting me into trouble with campus security after three uneventful years, and a big thanks from Fang who has to stay home all day long from now on. Terry Mastin Psychology Re-define Micheal Cross: Please re define “depicts violence in a positive manner.” 1 think I know what you are trying to say, but your phrase seems very vague to me; it implies some pornography depicts violence in a negative manner. Robin Stalcup Biology With facts This is a small note taking issue with the Emerald editorial of April 16, “Make your feel ings count by remembering to vote.” Being so titled, it was not surprising that the two paragraphs contained little substance. And they unfor tunately resolved as they had opened, with a bald exhortation that students “make your feel ings count. Vote.” A political contest, even one with farcical overtones, is not the sort of tournament where one should engage an opponent if one’s only armor, one’s only weapons, are rubber “feel ings.” Here, facts could prove helpful. Likewise, especially in a larger arena, history, philosophy, reason, practical considerations, and an educated sense of the common identity all ought to play some part in any debate and in the decision of issues. As for us, we students pro bably should not be encouraged to look for the unreasonable or “rubberized” candidate whose sole asset may be his unusual capacity to excite our flimsy and pitiful feelings. Even in our personal decisions, we all know such an exclusive or reduc tionist criterion would threaten havoc. How much more where decisions political are involved. Incidentally, on the same day it carried this "vote your feel ings” editorial, the Emerald ran an editorial endorsement of the Pinckney-Dreeszen “ticket” for ASUO president(s). 1 wonder what were the bases of this en dorsement, or what the justifications. The editors’ feel r Letters Policy The Emerald will attempt to print all letters containing fair comment on topics of interest to the University community. Letters to the editor must be limited to 250 words, typed, signed and the identification of the writer must be verified when the letter is turned in. The Emerald reserves the right to edit any letter for length or style. Letters to the editor should be turned into the Emerald office. Suite 300, EMU. ings, perhaps? I wonder if the editorial board would have reached the same conclusions, had they used their heads. Roch Steinbach Law Well in hand Thursday, April 18, there were two more letters in the Emerald denouncing homosex uality as evil, both arguing this point with quotations from the Bible, an ancient (though relatively recently “revised”) volume of Christian mythos. I must extend my thanks to all the Christians out there who are concerned about my soul, but I have my spirituality well in hand. That is part of why I do not accept Christianity, or any so-called “organized” religion, and I continue to find it audacious that people propose to better my life by applying to it the lessons gleaned from old fairy tales. I am not prepared to meet God. And I am not prepared to meet Satan. Neither will 1 spend eternity in Heaven, Nirvana, Olympia or any of the Nine Circles of Hell. The existence of these planes is an issue we must decide for ourselves, rather than being told what to believe by others. As for my spiritual destiny, I plan to fall into the arms of my Mother, to be part of her beauty and magic forever. I know she loves me for being who and what I am, and for loving in a way that is natural for me. In living honestly, I have been blessed with great joy, and I have honored the Goddess and all women.
