editorial Six IFC candidates stand out as best The Emerald endorses the following six Incidental Fee Committee candidates for the ASUO primary election (listed in alphabetical order): Kim Fuson, Armando Morales, Bill Odegaard, Cheryl Pellegrini, James Randall and Michael West. The editorial board of the Emerald interviewed all eleven IFC candidates Saturday and Sunday, asking them a wide range of questions. Candidates were queried about their backgrounds as well as their positions on a variety of issues. Fuson, Morales, Odegaard, Randall and West all demonstrate a solid understanding of the fee process, while Pellegrini has an understanding of budget management through her operation of a private business. West, who is the current ASUO coordinator of program development, has a number of good ideas for increasing the efficiency of the fee process, including the increased use of performance audits to analyze program budgets. Odegaard, who lost a close race for an IFC seat in last year’s election, says the committee must work as a “unified body” that strives to achieve objectivity during its deliberations. Pellegrini is a first-year law student who believes the IFC should place a higher priority on funding minority-student groups. Randall, co-director of the Amazon Community Tenants, believes the IFC should work to eliminate the duplication of services among fee-supported organizations. Morales, a past active-member of MEChA, says that IFC members need to have a greater understanding of the roles played by ASUO programs. And Fuson, director of the Jewish Student Union, says the IFC should gain more input from the campus population. The Emerald believes all six candidates are open minded individuals who will dedicate much time to ensure the dignity of the fee process. They all state a desire to main tain funding for a diversity of student groups. All support funding the Commentator and other groups that espouse “right- or left-wing” views. Fuson, Morales, Odegaard, Pellegrini, Randall and West will make a fine addition to the IFC. International Week — a great way to learn One of the most important ways to promote world peace is to promote international understanding. With this in mind, the Foreign Student Organization has been busy preparing for International Week 1985. Beginning today, University students will be treated to a week of cross cultural events with a specific purpose: to help increase awareness of the many different cultures in the world. The Foreign Student Organization deserves great praise for putting together one of the University’s most dynamic international-educational events. Throughout the week, students will be able to attend films, lectures, exhibits, and performances reflecting dozens of cutltures from around the world. Political issues will also be stressed, including lec tures on the United States’ withdrawel from UNESCO, the Iran-Iraq war, the 1980 coup in South Korea, the Swedish Welfare Model, and American nuclear missiles in Europe. The theme of world unity being promoted by the event can best be seen in the example of the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan. Both nations, along with Hong Kong, will share the same information table on “Asia Day.” Above all, International Week is a way to promote cross-cultural sensitivity and understanding. The Emerald hopes that students of all backgrounds will find time to share in this special event. Affair TV _ s vsF ' AND LOCK SlNCWE/' letters Like Lot Scott Elliott (ODE, April 10) wrote “Homosexuality is natural and occurs in a great many species besides our own.” If he is correct — and he provides no documentation — then sexual aberration is not limited to humans. In any case, it must be embarrassing to justify sexual encounters by ap pealing to the behavior of animals. And to which animal: the monogamous parrot, or the polyandrous — and I presume homosexual — domestic dog? Perhaps Scott would have us to behave like the female spider which, after copulation, devours its mate. I mean, if homosexuality is natural because animals do it, then so are incest, rape, polygamy, murder and cannibalism, natural. Contrary to his hedonic ethic, what is natural is not necessarily moral. Such think ing is positively paleolithic; it makes me wonder who’s really living in the Dark Ages. You’re misinformed Scott; ’’Love thy neighbor” was not Jesus Christ’s only message. He vigorously opposed recalcitrant sinners, hypocrites, and unbelievers. And yes, he did condemn homosexuality. I will not cast pearls before swine (Matthew 7:6): only a warning. Jesus specifically endorsed the cataclysm of burning sulfur that consumed the Sodomites. He made it clear, moreover, that whereas Sodom suffered a tormenting destruction, those who do not accept him will fare even worse. Know for certain that we do not fear homosexuals or their vices; but like.Lot, the only God-fearing man in Sodom, we fear God and speak out against this abomination, for the sake of our cities and for the sake of immortal souls. Tim Smith Eugene Best choice Having been a political science student here at the University for almost four years. 1 have come in contact with many other students who share my concerns about politics, history and the condition of the world around us. One who has par ticularly impressed me with her knowledge and commitment to her ideals is Donna Lawrence, who is running for SUAB seat 4 (representing international studies, geography, history and political science). Donna Lawrence is willing to work hard to create a strong and effective student voice in the University Assembly and Stu dent Senate. Donna recently finished her tenure as OSPIRG Local Board chairperson, where she participated in the CUB campaign and was exposed to the hard work and discipline it takes to be successful in politics. Prior to this she served a year as a college student-body president and sat on the Oregon Community College’s Board of Directors. Currently she is serv ing an internship for state Rep. Ron Eachus of Eugene. Donna Lawrence has demonstrated in depth involvement, commit ment and an awareness of stu anywhere in the front-page ODE photo Nov. 29, as Munion claims. To.state that she does is, at best, an embarrassing mistake. At worst, it is libelous. That Munion has to resort to low blows and outright lies to win this election, perhaps in dicates the type of leadership he would provide. Do you want so meone like this representing you? I strongly encourage all political science, history, geography and international studies majors to cast their votes Wednesday and Thursday for Donna Lawrence, SUAB posi tion 4. She is truly the best qualified candidate. But regardless of the outcome of the election, 1 think Munion owes Donna an apology. Through my work as co-director of Amazon Com munity Tenants I have seen first-hand the importance of campus support organizations for low-income, minority and foreign students. I can further relate to this being 28. married, and having three small boys. I believe in the importance of a diversified student body and will represent both traditional and non-traditional students on the IFC. I will accomplish this by working closely with cam pus organizations in the budgeting process. Ted Wieking political science Outright lies Although 1 am not eligible to vote in the upcoming SUAB elections, 1 cannot let Ron Mu nion’s letter (ODE April 11) pass without comment. Like Munion, I too know Don na Lawrence, his opponent for SUAB position 4. But unlike Munion, I am able to recognize her in a photograph. Donna Lawrence does not appear perience which I feel is as im portant as the ability to be im partial and objective. I am work ing towards an accounting degree. My public service ex perience includes two city council (Baker, Ore.) appoint ments to the Community Development Advisory Com mittee and the Downtown Revitalization Advisory Committee. When voting, choose a can didate that is sensitive to the needs of the non-traditional and foreign students as well as one that will diligently represent the needs of traditional students, vote James Randall for IFC.
