    Women swimmers take
third in NorPac meet
The Oregon women's
swimming team finished
third behind the favored
University of California and
the University of
Washington at the NorPac
Championships last
weekend in Salinas. Calif.
The Golden Bears from
California, who were ex
pected to run away with the
meet, did just that with 1,495
points. The Huskies easily
took second with 1,003 and
the Ducks chalked up 568
points for third. They were
followed by Washington
State University with 454,
San Jose State University
with 356, Oregon State
University with 351 and
Fresno State University with
323.
The Ducks were led by
Gwen Roedel, who won the
1.650-yard freestyle in
16:56.89, breaking her
school record of 17:06.21.
Roedel broke the NorPac
record of 17:12.14 set last
year by teammate Babetfe
Brundage. Roedel also took
second in the 500-yard
freestyle, ninth in the
200-yard freestyle and third
in the 200-yard backstroke.
Brundage was not far

WSU rolls past Oregon gymnasts
The Oregon women’s gym
nastics team ended its regular
season on a disappointing note
Friday night, as the Washington
State University Cougars
defeated the Ducks,
176.2-168.55 in Gerlinger
Annex.
In addition to the loss, Gret
chen Kind, one of Oregon's
strongest all-around per
formers, suffered a knee injury
in the final event of the evening.
Kind, a freshman, was coming
off a twisting double-back flip
in the floor exercise and hyper
extended her right knee on the
landing. Kind is unsure if she
will be back to full strength
when the NorPac Champion
ships occur on March 15.
While Oregon turned in one
of its best team scores of the
season, it was not enough to
topple the Cougars, who are
seeking the final berth in the
NCAA regional gymnastics
championships.
The Ducks turned in strong
performances all the way down
the mostly freshman roster, ex
cept on the beam where WSU
had the top three finishers.
Julie Weinstein captured
third place finishes in the
uneven bars and the floor exer
cise with scores of 8.7 and 9.0
respectively. Kind took second
on the uneven bars with a 9.05.
Cyndee Maxwell added a third
place in the floor exercise with a
9.0.
Sophomore Denise Garcia
turned in the best all-around.
Two Ducks advance to Oklaho
By Capi Lynn
Two Oregon wrestlers qualified for the na
tional championships by placing in the top two of
their weight divisions at the Pacific-10 Wrestling
Championships in Tempe, Arizona. Sunday.
The Ducks tied for fourth with Washington
State University in the team standings at 32
points. Arizona State University walked away
with the team title with 114*4, while Oregon
State University was a distant second with 69
points.
Oregon freshman Glenn Jarrett won the
126-pound title, and junior Mike Harter claimed
second place in the 177-pound weight division to
advance to the National Collegiate Association
Championships in in Oklahoma City, March
14-16.
Jarrett went into the tournament seeded third
before upsetting both the number one and two
seeds to capture the crown. In his opening match,
the freshman whipped Oregon State University’s
Rodney Hawthorne. 13-7. The win over
Hawthorne avenged an earlier loss and draw to
Hawthorne.
The Ducks’ 126-pounder then crushed
number one seeded Gary Bairos erf Arizona State
in the championship bout. 8-2 to qualify for the
NCAA’s.
"I’m extremely pleased with Jarrett's perfor
mance,” Oregon coach Ron Finley said of his sur
prise Pac-10 champion. “He was definitely the
bright spot of the tournament as he wrestled the
best he has all year.’*
Harter lost a narrow 6-5 decision in the
177-pound championship match to number one
seed Tom Kolopus of ASU. but still qualified for
the NCAA's by capturing the runner-up spot.
Harter advanced to the finals by defeating WSU's
Mike Sudduth. 3-2.
