Women swimmers take third in NorPac meet The Oregon women's swimming team finished third behind the favored University of California and the University of Washington at the NorPac Championships last weekend in Salinas. Calif. The Golden Bears from California, who were ex pected to run away with the meet, did just that with 1,495 points. The Huskies easily took second with 1,003 and the Ducks chalked up 568 points for third. They were followed by Washington State University with 454, San Jose State University with 356, Oregon State University with 351 and Fresno State University with 323. The Ducks were led by Gwen Roedel, who won the 1.650-yard freestyle in 16:56.89, breaking her school record of 17:06.21. Roedel broke the NorPac record of 17:12.14 set last year by teammate Babetfe Brundage. Roedel also took second in the 500-yard freestyle, ninth in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 200-yard backstroke. Brundage was not far behind, finishing third in the 1,650 freestyle, fourth in the 500 freestyle, third in the 400-yard individual medley and fifth in the 200-yard in dividual medley. Kristin Read also perform ed well and place third in the 50-yard freestyle and a fifth in the 100-yard freestyle. All three girls were part of the fifth-place 400-yard freestyle relay, the third place 800-yard freestyle relay and the second-place 400-yard medley relay teams. Read was also on the 200 freestyle relay team and the 200-yard medley relay team. Both teams took third place. Other top Duck performers included Billie Battles. Patricia Lorys, Paris Oliver and Geegee Wharton. WSU rolls past Oregon gymnasts The Oregon women’s gym nastics team ended its regular season on a disappointing note Friday night, as the Washington State University Cougars defeated the Ducks, 176.2-168.55 in Gerlinger Annex. In addition to the loss, Gret chen Kind, one of Oregon's strongest all-around per formers, suffered a knee injury in the final event of the evening. Kind, a freshman, was coming off a twisting double-back flip in the floor exercise and hyper extended her right knee on the landing. Kind is unsure if she will be back to full strength when the NorPac Champion ships occur on March 15. While Oregon turned in one of its best team scores of the season, it was not enough to topple the Cougars, who are seeking the final berth in the NCAA regional gymnastics championships. The Ducks turned in strong performances all the way down the mostly freshman roster, ex cept on the beam where WSU had the top three finishers. Julie Weinstein captured third place finishes in the uneven bars and the floor exer cise with scores of 8.7 and 9.0 respectively. Kind took second on the uneven bars with a 9.05. Cyndee Maxwell added a third place in the floor exercise with a 9.0. Sophomore Denise Garcia turned in the best all-around. Two Ducks advance to Oklaho By Capi Lynn Two Oregon wrestlers qualified for the na tional championships by placing in the top two of their weight divisions at the Pacific-10 Wrestling Championships in Tempe, Arizona. Sunday. The Ducks tied for fourth with Washington State University in the team standings at 32 points. Arizona State University walked away with the team title with 114*4, while Oregon State University was a distant second with 69 points. Oregon freshman Glenn Jarrett won the 126-pound title, and junior Mike Harter claimed second place in the 177-pound weight division to advance to the National Collegiate Association Championships in in Oklahoma City, March 14-16. Jarrett went into the tournament seeded third before upsetting both the number one and two seeds to capture the crown. In his opening match, the freshman whipped Oregon State University’s Rodney Hawthorne. 13-7. The win over Hawthorne avenged an earlier loss and draw to Hawthorne. The Ducks’ 126-pounder then crushed number one seeded Gary Bairos erf Arizona State in the championship bout. 8-2 to qualify for the NCAA’s. "I’m extremely pleased with Jarrett's perfor mance,” Oregon coach Ron Finley said of his sur prise Pac-10 champion. “He was definitely the bright spot of the tournament as he wrestled the best he has all year.’* Harter lost a narrow 6-5 decision in the 177-pound championship match to number one seed Tom Kolopus of ASU. but still qualified for the NCAA's by capturing the runner-up spot.
