departments update Minor change The math requirement for those seeking a minor in business administration has been changed. The minor no longer requires a term of calculus, says Don Lytle, undergraduate program director for the College of Business Ad ministration. The only math re quirement is college algebra (Math 101) or its equivalent. Seminar funded Provost Dick Hill has agreed to set aside $50,000 to encourage departments to offer freshmen seminars in addition to the regular departmental of ferings, according to the Facul ty Advisory Council. This is a result of the over whelmingly positive response to last year’s pilot project of small classes offered to first year students. The classes were taught by volunteer teachers in an effort to improve the quality of undergraduate education and decrease the anonymity felt by students attending large classes. The new three-credit courses will be funded at $2,000 each with smaller amounts available for one- and two-credit weekend workshops. In each case, the money will be paid to the department to be used at the discretion of the department head. Requests for this money should be sent to John Lallas-in the President’s office by Feb. 21 with a description of the course to be offered and a brief biographical sketch of the per son offering the course. Library hours Three of the University libraries have expanded their hours. The University Library, Science Library, and Architec ture and Allied Arts Library will increase their weekend hours. The three libraries will now be open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Monday through Friday. On Saturdays, hours will be 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday hours will remain 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. According to Provost Dick Hill, the expanded hours are "one direct benefit of the recent action by the Emergency Board and the subsequent allocation of funds by the Stale Board of Higher Education." New manager Melody Ward Leslie has been named manager of promo tion and broadcast services for the University’s office of News and Information Services. Leslie was a news anchor and reporter at radio station KUGN. She succeeds Mike Moskovitz, who resigned last year to become Springfield’s public in formation officer. She will manage promotion of a variety of campus events and services, including running the radio news service. Ruhl Fellows Ted Baker, publisher of The Register-Guard, has been nam ed one of two 1985 Ruhl Fellows by the University School of Journalism. Baker will visit the University Feb. 18-21 to speak to jour nalism classes and to meet in formally with students and faculty members as part of the annual Ruhl Symposium on journalism ethics and media performance. The second Ruhl Fellow is Steve Woodward, editor of The Business Journal in Portland, who will visit the University in late April. Compiled by Robin Joannides Famous Spuds warm up against faculty today The University’s College Bowl champions aren’t sure the 'varsity sport of the mind” qualifies as a “subculture,” but they insist the pursuit is far from trivial. The Famous Potatoes of McClure Hall, defending University champions after muting three other residence hall teams Feb. 5, will warm up for regional competition with a bout against a faculty squad today. The regional competition will take place Saturday in Boise, Idaho. If victorious, the team will move on to national competition and face College Bowl giants like Minnesota, Washington University of St. Louis and North Carolina. “Everybody looks in fear at North Carolina," says Famous Potato Jeff Osanka. “We played them in a tourna ment earlier this school year in Atlanta, and they Just demolished us,” The Potatoes finished second in regionals last year to the University of Idaho when the two final rounds were decided on “literature packets.” “We were weak on literature." he said. “So this year we found Hal.” Ha! Zweben, an English major, is the team’s only new member. Osanka, who switched majors this year from law to public policy management, joins biology major Chris Kam meyer, history major Bob Hands, and journalism major David Paul, an alternate member. The faculty will counter with members, lack Maddex. history; Richard Stein, English; Cheyney Ryan, philosophy; Kenneth Helphand, landscape architecture; John Farley, physics; and Marjory Ramey, director of housing, in today's contest at 4 p.m. in Dad’s Room EMU.
