' j ^Continued from Page IB possible, Jacobson has placed the squad’s em phasis on doubles this year. Jackie Comeau, a sophomore from Portland, will team up with Grail at the number one doubles spot. Comeau will take the number three singles position as well. "Jackie is a clever player, she thinks all the time," says Jacobson. Newcomer Helen Zech, a sophomore from Olympia, Wash., will play the number two singles position. Zech has a lot of talent and men tal toughness and she is working hard to make that talent flower, says Jacobson. Ann Shepherd, sophomore from Atherton, Calif., is expected to move up from her number six spot of a year ago. Shepherd is the most im proved doubles player as well as the hardest hit ter on the team. Jacobson cites her serve and volley as her strong points and says "She’ll be a real cracker-jack player in time." The remaining three spots on the traveling team are wide open, and Jacobson feels that everyone is working very hard to clear up that situation. Kim Kalapus and Liz O’Donnell, who saw limited action last year, will be vying for a spot on the traveling squad. They’re joined by newcomers Leslie Cseh, Tracy Hinchcliffe and Cathy Homgren. All the changes and youth on this year's team give Jacobson an enormous challenge. Jacobson brings to the University a commitment to the en tire tennis game. Not only does the squad work out on the court, but it goes through seminars on mental imagery, goal setting, and match analysis as well. This year’s team even has a weekly aerobics class. "By going at it from all angles. I'll be in terested to see if it gives us a competitive edge,” Jacobson explains. "I’m anxious to see if the add ed mental toughness can pull some specific mat ches our way.” Jacobson feels the University of Washington will be the biggest competition this year. She hopes that consistent serving, smart playing and effective strategy will do more than mere stroking techniques for this year's team. Often, Jacobson plays as part of the doubles teams during the two-hour practices. The players learn most by doing, she explains, and her strategy talks and spot corrections help. Jacobson, a University graduate, was the number one ranked singles player in Oregon for women 35 and older last year. She is also the Eugene women’s tennis team’s number one player. She has worked under internationally known instructors Harry Hopman in Florida and Guilders Tilmanis in Portland. Jacobson has coached the women’s tennis team at Lane Community College and the boy’s team at Eugene’s Marist High School. She says coaching a NorPac team is more work because of the longer practices and greater administrative responsibilities. Jacobson will be recruiting harder for next year to add talent to this year’s squad of hard workers. She encourages any good players in terested in trying out for the tennis team to con tact her as there are still openings on this year’s team.
