‘Where are we now?’ Celebrating King’s birthday University President Paul Olum has declared Tuesday “Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Day,” and a series of free public events leading Graphic CCourtesy of Black Student Union up to the celebration of King’s birthday anniver sary is planned by the Black Student Union. Olum made the declaration “in honor of the slain civil rights leader and in celebration of his life.” Today and Friday, three films on King’s life will be shown in rotation in Room 167 of the EMU. The scheduled films are “A Man Of Peace,” “From Montgomery To Memphis” and “The Assassin Years.” On Sunday, a program and reception will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hu It Center. Highlighting the program will be a lecture by Mona Humphries Bailey, Washington state assis tant superintendent of public instruction, at about 4:30 p.m. in the Soreng Theatre. Bailey is a member of the American Civil Liberties Union National Advisory Board and a director of the National Coalition on Black Power Participation. Her lecture, with the theme “Where Are We Now?”, is expected to be a review of civil rights progress during the 17 years since King’s assassination. A free public reception will follow in the Hult Center’s Studio I. King was bom Jan. 15, 1929, and was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tenn. The black minister and civil rights leader, who led a boycott of the Montgomery, Ala. bus system in 1955-56, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Doctoral student hosts radio show KWAX’s Oregon Evening program will be transformed in to two-way radio as Dean Gar rison. doctoral candidate from the University’s counseling department hosts a new series entitled “All in the Family,” every Monday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The hour-long program will feature guest interviews and listener call-ins on topics con cerning the family including: coping as a single parent; help ing children through divorce; coping with sexual abuse; the influence of Boy George and Michael Jackson on children’s sexual identity: and others. Listeners are invited to call in with questions for the pro gram’s guests at 686-4245.
