editorial Take steps to beat winter term blues This is the shortest term of the year and one of the most Intense. A lot of students take their heaviest course load dur ing winter term in order to free up more time during spring term, when increased sunshine and warmer days make it harder to focus on studying. With th? long Christmas holiday over and almost no other vacations in sight, getting back into school at the start of winter term can be hard, to say the least. And with extra short days, little sunshine and lots of rain, students often find themselves slipping into the mid-school-year blues. There are ways, however, to get around the frustrations of winter term. If you have ever thought about taking a physical education class, this is the time to do it. Classes in swimming, dancing, weight lifting, jogging, tennis, etc. are all offered. They can help break up the monotony of study ing all the time and can help to release built-up tension with exercise. Taking a physical education class also is a good way to discipline yourself into exercising, when it is often easier to just skip it due to laziness. Since a lot of students tend to spend most of their time inside during winter term, taking an exercise class can make a big difference in releasing tension. Another way to deal with the mid-school-year blues is to take the necessary steps to make the term more enjoyable. This means going out of your way to meet people and to par ticipate in student activities that interest you. Taking the time to get involved with activities apart from class work and studying can make a heavy course load more tolerable and winter term more enjoyable. Perhaps most important, however, is to make use of the University counseling center when trying to deal with the troubles that tend to beset students during winter term. It’s a good idea to just go in and schedule a time to talk with someone in the counseling center. This can keep tensions from building, and it also is a good way to share some per sonal feelings when there is a need to do just that. Take the offensive this year by beating out the winter term blues. It’s amazing how a physical education class, a talk with a counselor, or getting involved with a campus organization can make a positive difference in what winter term will be like for you. Will 1985 take us closer to nuclear ‘doomsday9? In 1984. the famous “Doomsday Clock" jumped to three minutes before midnight. Not since 1953. when the Soviet Union detonated its first hydrogen bomb, has the clock tick ed so dose to doomsday. In 1972. at the time of the Salt 1 Arms Limitation Agreement signed between the United States and the Soviets, the clock was put back as far as 12 minutes until midnight. The “Doomsday Clock" was devised in 1947 by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The purpose of the dock is to show a graphic representation of the status of the world in relation to nuclear annihilation. The reason for the 1984 jump toward nuclear annihila tion was the failure of arms control negotiations between the United States and the Soviets. Will 1985 bring us doser to nuclear annihilation? A continuation of the arms race fueled by the massive nuclear build-up during President Ronald Reagan's first term in office is sure to bring us closer >•** t~ M. Jim Moon; Eugene It’s unnatural I find it odd that some people feel homosexuality, adultery and sex with children are nor mal. Even excluding Cod’s word (the Bible), one finds that these behaviors are anything but natural. If homosexuality were indeed natural, mankind would have died off years ago. Homosex uality, kiddy sex, etc., would have destroyed society. We see it happening today; AIDS is running rampant. Homosexuals are by far and away the most diseased creatures on earth (ex cluding the cockroach and the rat). Our ancestors would have died out had they been predominately homosexual. Groups which indulge in im morality and ran against natural laws could be expected, through natural process, to either become diseased and die out or shrink in numbers and be destroyed by other civilizations. Sound unfair? Well that's tough, isn't it? Is it unfair that since nearly all denominations which are opposed to homosex uality (along with non-religious people), have the lowest infant mortality in America and the longest life expectancy? Sounds like they're more in touch with nature than most humanist liberals. Humanist liberals tell us that "homosexuality" and unac countability are natural. However, the Bible and Dar win's theories are in complete agreement that homosexuality is unnatural Face it, liberals, either you ac cept the Bible or you accept Dar win. there's no in-betweens. Either wav you are Irvcerc — maybe that's why you have to recruit people to your warped °*“*f — God and all heterosex uals know you can't reproduce. Brad Hall Free speech As a participant in the non holent civil disobedience at the Marine recruiter's presentation on 11/28, I have been the sub ject of much criticism by some members of the Eugene com munity and the University. At issue has been the argument that our protest violated the Marine recruiters' right to free speech. We prohibited the Marines from showing their slide presentation designed to gain new Marine Corps recruits. Paul Olum upholds the Marines' right to free speech, perhaps in the same manner that he defended his work which led to the development of one of the most destructive weapons on this planet. Unfor tunately, by the time one realizes the truth of one’s ac tions. as Olum eventually did, the effects have already been felt. Perhaps Olum and his righteous entourage could travel to South Africa and educate the black population about the reasons the whites have the right to tell them that they do not belong on their beaches, in their establishments, or on their streets. When Olum and Company return, they should not hesitate in defending the Marines’ rights to encourage people to join them in traveling to lands where there are different peo ple. some with ideas different than their own. After all. in situations where these people cannot be persuaded that the U.S. way is the right way, the recruits can exercise their newly-delegated right to kill. Wake up, people! The right to free speech is not nearly as clear as you might be led to believe. One has no more right to en courage rape, slavery or murder than to commit such acts.
