Wilson named dean of students By Jolayne Houtz Of the Emerald Shirley Wilson was named the University dean of students, says Richard Hill, vice presi dent for academic affairs and provost. Wilson, 55, immediately assumes the post, which she has held in an acting capacity since January 1983 when former-Dean of Students Robert Bowlin took a leave of absence to serve as associate director of the Com mission on Colleges of the Nor thwest Association of Schools and Colleges. Bowlin resigned in August to Shirley Wilson continue with the Seattle-based accrediting organization. Wilson will also serve as ac ting associate provost for stu dent affairs for Gerry Moseley, associate provost for student af fairs, who went on sabbatical leave in Texas, California and Virginia, fames Buch, director of the Office of Admissions and Records, will assist her. Joseph Wade will be acting director of the Office of Academic Advising and Stu dent Services, which Wilson had continued to direct while acting as dean. An internal search is planned to fill the academic advising post permanently. Comedienne to make light of nuclear issues Barbara George, a New York City comic and actress, will confront the problems of nuclear weapons, power and waste in a one woman show Tuesday night in Eugene. The performance, entitled “Everything I Ever Wanted to Ask About Nukes and Was Afraid to Ask,” will begin at 7:30 at 631 E. 19th Ave. The event is sponsored by the Citizen Action for Lasting Security. George, who is on a nation wide tour, presents her anti nuclear message through characters such as the “Radia tion Wizard” and a woman from the Bikini Islands. The program also includes "The Time has Come,” a short film on international resistance to the arms race. Admission is $3 for adults, $1.50 for teen agers and free for children. 300 EMU *686-5511 “We are fortunate to have a person with Shirley Wilson’s talent and ingenuity accept this important position,” Hill says. “As a result of her 15 years of service, Dr. Wilson has developed an unusual understanding of our university in all its complexity, and her work with us has been characterized by creativeness and dedication.” Wilson will oversee a staff of about 75 and an annual budget of $1.4 million. She is responsi ble for a variety of programs relating to the health, conduct and retention of students, in cluding assistance during emergencies and liaison with parents and with social, off campus living and religious organizations. She is also responsible for coordinating activities in academic advising and student services, career planning and placement, counseling, interna tional services, student development and student conduct. “I look at this job as one in which I can function as an ad vocate for students,” she says. “It’s one that enables me to build bridges between the stu dent affairs staff and the students.” “I’m eager to keep the freshmen seminars going,” she says. She hopes to convince more senior faculty members to volunteer to teach these small group classes, which were of fered for the first time this fall. Wilson joined the student af fairs staff in 1969 as associate dean of students and dean of women. She held that position until 1978 when the student af fairs office reorganized, and she became director of academic ad vising and students services. She was acting dean of students during 1977-78. She has a joint appointment in the College of Education’s Division of Educational Policy and Management where she teaches and advises graduate students in higher education administration. Wilson has been a member and secretary of the University Senate. She also has served three two-year terms on the Faculty Advisory Council, which she chaired during the 1983-84 school year. A graduate of Whitman Col lege in Walla Walla, Wash., Wilson has a master’s degree from Stanford University and a doctoral degree from Washington State University.
