    Chinese drop volleyballers
The Oregon women’s
volleyball team received a taste
of international play Sunday
night in McArthur Court as the
national team from the People’s
Republic of China beat the
Ducks in three games. *15-10,
15-5 and 15-10 in an exhibition
match.
Oregon played the Chinese
tough throughout the three
games, but an experienced
frontline led by Bu Xiao Xia and
Chen Ya Chun combined on 24
kills to put an end to the Ducks’
upset hopes.
“Our goal was to score five
points,” said Oregon coach
Chris Voelz. “We surpassed
that goal and more.”
Voelz credited China’s place
ment of the ball against the
Ducks as the key to the match.
"They are very good," said
Voelz. "We did fairly well, but
it hard for us to adjust to the
scene of the ball.”
Voelz was amazed at China's
ability to make the ball drop on
the serve where the Chinese
scored 11 service aces against
the Ducks.
"Their balls would move two
or three feet and then drop
some.” said Voelz. "We are us
ed to the ball droppng eight to
ten inches in American
volleyball.”

day and Saturday.
On Friday, the Ducks lost a
crucial NorPac conference
match to Fresno State Universi
ty in four games. The Bulldogs
of Fresno State won 15-17,
15-11, 15-8 and 15-9 to improve
their league mark to 6-1. Oregon
with the loss dropped to 4-2 in
the NorPac, 16-8 overall.
“It was a real shame we did
not execute at all against Fresno
State,” said Voelz. “We didn’t
make a great effort on defense.
I'm just glad it wasn’t for the
championship.”
Oregon’s middle setter Sue
Harbour had 29 kills against
FSU while Shaunna Koenig
and Cynthia Shepherd added 12
and 11 kills respectively for the
Ducks in a losing effort.
“We did not play up to our
potential,” said Harbour on the
FSU loss. “It was their biggest
game of the year and they were
up for us.”
The Ducks rebounded from
the FSU loss with a win over an
inspired Cal-State Bakersfierld
team in four games 15-8, 16-14,
12-15 and 15-11.
“They are one of the top Divi
sion Two teams in the nation,”
said Voelz of the win which up
• ped Oregon’s record to 17-8
overall. “We were glad to get
out of there with a win.”
Freshman Teri Kramer felt the
team was sluggish in California.
“We vvere kind of. in a
.slump," said Kramer. “We
weren't working as a team.—
everyone . was moving very
slow.” '
'• Voelz will install -higher in
tensity practices” this week as
the Ducks prepare for road mat
ches-against the University of
California and the University of
San Francisco on Friday and
Saturday.
