Celebration

over 160 entries beginning at 10 a.m. at South Eugene
High School. The parade will include an assortment of
clowns, marching bands, a flash-dancing equestrian act,
a cheetah and an elephant. The parade will proceed
down High Street, stop at the mall and then return to
the high school.
A variety of artwork will be displayed throughout the
downtown.area during the Celebration. Included will
be the Artisan's Home Showcase with crafwdemonstra
tions ranging from metal work to spinning to printing.
One of Saturday's events will be the Pape Logging
Competition at 12:30 p.m. at 8th Avenue and Willamette
Street. Big Man Cliff Hughes from New Zealand and
other well-known woodsmen will compete with novices
in several competitions throughout the day. Antique
logging equipment will be demonstrated.
A new feature of the Celebration this year will be the
the first annual "Fifth Avenue Jazz Festival" on Satur
day. The section of Fifth Avenue between Oak and Pearl
Streets will be closed to traffic, and tables and landscap
ing will be brought in to create a festive atmosphere.
Nine performances are scheduled, and KLCC-FM (89.7)
will broadcast live from noon until 2 p.m. and again at 6
p.m. for local jazz guitarist Don Latarski’s performance.
Following the jazz festival, KZEl-FM (91.9) will sponsor
a rock'n'roll dance at Studio One in the Hult Center.
Saturday night performers include Los Falcons, the
Whitetones and the Cashiers with The Radar Angels.
Admission is $3.96 and the music lasts until 2 a.m.
Sunday's schedule Is divided into three shows spann
ing from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m.; admission is $2.96. Performers

for the first show include The Hoodlums, The Commo
tions, and The Stares; Chilopa, J. Walkers and Shumba
play the second show; and the third show lineup is
Single Mary, Sneakers and Xstatic.
Sunday morning Eugene athletes will have a choice
between the eight-kilometer Performing Arts Run, and a
one-kilometer "fun run," or a series of bicycle races.
Both runs start near the Hilton at 10 a.m. The bicycle
race takes off at 2nd Avenue and High Street with seven
different races beginning at 12:30 p.m.
For those who would rather eat than compete, Eugene
Mayor Gus Keller will announce the winners oi the cake
competition at noon. The competitors are Lane County
retail and wholesale bakers. Each cake will be fudged
for taste and innovative design in staying with the
theme of "Life in Eugene."
Food for thought will be available Sunday afternoon
when speakers from the University offer insights into
political campaigning. The hour-long sessions beginn
ing at 1 p.m. in the Hilton Conference Center and Sousa
Room will include discussions on the psychology of
deception, women in politics, political cartoon analysis
and past Oregon campaigns.
Anyone needing transportation downtown can ride
on a motorized reproduction of a San Francisco cable
car, which will run Friday and Sunday from the Universi
ty to Downtown. Saturday it will ferry folks from Autzen
Stadium down to the festivities after the Duck's football
game. For more information about the cable car's
routes and times call 687-1966.

entertainment at the Huh Center, call 686-5000,
