Although pre-meet favorite Washington State lost a key athlete in the qualifying rounds Wednesday, it got an unex pected lift when Lee Cordon qualified for the 100 final Thursday. Meanwhile, supposed runner up Oregon got a few pleasant surprises in the 5,000 and javelin. But neither head coach — Oregon's Bill Dellinger or WSU's John Chaplin — would admit he had a better shot at the title. “I can't say what'll happen yet, because all the points are coming tomorrow and Satur day," Dellinger said. "We have almost everybody in, but I'm hopeful some athletes can bounce back. (Brian) Crouser was 10th in the javelin qualify ing and (Ken) Flax was 12th (ac tually 11th) in the hammer, so I have to hope they do better." Chaplin wasn't commenting on anything related to the NCAA meet, pointing to past problems with the Oregon media. "I'm not talking to anyone in the state of Oregon," he said. But Oregon assistant coach John Gillespie was willing to make a prediction — sort of. "I thought this morning we were the favorite, but now it's back to WSU," Gillespie said. "It will be a good race for first," said Oregon's Dub Myers, after finishing second in his 1,500 heat in 3:42.79 to qualify for Saturday's final. "I think we're doing as good or better than we thought we would." However, the Ducks seemed strangely unconcerned about their battle with the Cougars for the NCAA crown. That was for a reason, according to Myers. "Bill told us 'Don't get yourself worked up over the team race — get worked up over your own race,' " Myers said. That was one thing Oregon's ■ Photo by Kirk Hirotd Oregon's Dub Myers was one of two Ducks to fly into the 1,500 meter final. He finished second in his heat in 3:42.79. athletes did well all day — get worked up. The Ducks moved eight of their 10 entrants Thurs day into the finals. Included were Myers and favorite Joa quim Cruz in the 1,500; Brian Crouser and Frode Stormyr in the javelin; )im Hill, John Zishka and Mike Blackmore in the 5,000; and Kory Tarpenning in the pole vault. Meanwhile, the Cougars — who lost high jumper Brent Harken (a best of 7-6 and predicted to finish first or se cond) in the qualifying rounds Wednesday — got some good news when Gordon got stuck in the day's fastest 100 heat and qualified for the final with a third-place 10.27. WSU also got qualifying performances from Gabriel Tiacoh in the 400 meters, Dimitrios Koutsoukis in the shot put, Omar Ortega in the 1,500, Jan Johansson in the javelin, Joseph Taiwo and Fran cis Dodoo in the triple jump, and Julius Korir and Peter Koech in the 5,000. "We're well, but so is WSU," Gillespie said. "Their sprinters are doing the job, and Harken is not that big of a factor because ^ STUDENT vB) co-op ASSOCIATION Housing, of, by and for Students • Student Owned and Operated • Friendly Co-Ed student Environment for 61 women and men • Adjacent to Campus • Lower Cost Alternative Double Single 8 Weeks $350.00 $430.00 II Weeks $450.00 $530.00 • Quality Meals (vegetarian and conventional) • Boarding (Meals only) option Available Visit, Write or Call for more info: Campbell CO-OP, 1670 Alder, 686-5189 Janet Smith CO-OP, 1790 Alder, 686-4261 Students Cooperative Association 1670 Alder Eugene, Oregon 97401 (503) 342-1665 Pac-10 champ lames Cunn ingham is a very good high jumper. Whatever points they lost they got back with Gordon and the triple jump." Perhaps the most impressive performance Friday by the Ducks was in the two heats of the 5,000. Hill won the first heat in 14:07.25 with a blistering final lap kick, while Blackmore finish ed fast over the last 200 meters to grab third in 14:07.79. In the second heat, Zishka stayed near the front of the pack before making his move on the backstretch of the final lap. He won in the day's fastest time — 13:58.65 — while behind him seven runners were posting faster time than Hill's. “I knew whoever took the lead would go out faster than the first heat," said Zishka, who seems to have recovered from the bone spur that sidelined him last spring. "I knew we were faster than the first heat, but everyone was going fast (at the end) so I just went for it. "We have three guys in the final, and I think it tells you something about our program."
