Professor wins prize
“We came in one day and
found a cockroach pinned on
our poster of Sen. Mark Hat
field. Swastikas have been
drawn on our picture of Ronald
Reagan. Our posters have been
torn and long-distance calls
have been fouled up," Mat
thews says.

And that's too bad, he says,
because “conversation between
groups provides good energy.
Most of the people down here
have really studied the issues
and take them to heart. Posi
tions are well thought-out.
“We've made some friends
with the group closest to us,
OSPIRG. Friends don't have to
agree politically," he says. “And
once you've made friends, how
can you be rude to them?"
Across the room, Rusk thinks
the evolution of Suite 1 has
been "incredible. There's been
a lot of communication with
outside groups. But, now that
the College Republicans have
entered the core of the room we
have to ask ourselves: 'was this
their intention?'
"If anyone ever thought that
Suite 1 is a microcosm or a
reflection of the world, they
would be wrong," Celtner says.
"Students using state facilities
can't take the property and say
that it can only be used for one
view."
A second University professor has received an Alexander von
Humboldt prize for 1984-85, one of 70 awarded annually to U.S.
scientists.
Physics Prof. Marvin Girardeau, a member of the University's
Theoretical Science Institute, was acknowledged by the West Ger
man institute for his work on atomic collisions in chemical
reactions.
The awards have been granted since 1972 in appreciation for U.S.
post-World War II reconstruction aid.
Girardeau will study and conduct research at the Max Planck In
stitute for Radiation Chemistry at Mulheim, West Germany, beginn
ing in July. While there, he will apply methods of theoretical physics
to problems of chemical interest, such as chemical reaction
dynamics, magnetism and semiconductors.

When you’re in a tight spot,
good friends will help you out.
When you pulled in two hours ago, you didn’t
have this problem. And with a party just starting,
the last thing you wanted to do was
wait around another two hours.
Neither did the rest of the guys.
So when they offered to give you
a lift, that’s exactly what they did,
proving not only that they were
in good shape, but that they
were good friends.
So show- them what apprecia
tion is all about. Tonight, let it
be Lowenbrau.
Lowenbrau. Here’s to good friends.
