CMy__-..tip_ letters No more calls? We need a broader biblical perspective than that given by Brother Jed Smock and Sister Cindy Smock on campus April 3. Here are some questions con cerning the real issues which one might desire to ponder: What are the key liberty or freedom concepts in the Book of Galatians in the New Testament? Why were Protestant beliefs so nearly congruent 100 years ago? What is the spiritual point above the continuum having Phariseeism at one end and paganism at the other end? Why are the intellectual con tributions of the First Century Apostle Paul so relevant now? Who is the God-man? How can there be a reconcilia tion of things rendered to Caesar and things rendered to God? What is the concept of "the late great planet Earth"? . Why is the Bible supra scientific? What is the "Day After" challenge? Where are the stories about sex in the Bible? What are the concepts of ministries (clergy, laity, men, women, etc.) in scripture? How are wisdom and reason presented in the Biblical account? Why is the carbon dating theory faulty? Why were Ivy League colleges so Christian-oriented in their formative years? If this is not enough, perhaps there could be a moderated, in door forum between Cindy, I, Jed and Arlene (my wife). Darrel Klink The third law When Jed and Sister Cindy came to the University to "warn the campus whores, homos, masturbators, commies, and assorted degenerates and dumb-bells (not to mention dingdongs) of their impending damnation" there were those who said that such educated people as university students weren't making very intelligent arguments against the ex-hippy and reformed disco queen's twisted logic. My question is how does one argue logically with an irrational '60s acid casualty? I and many others at first tried to do just that only to be ridicul ed, slandered, or ignored by the "righteous, (self-proclaimed) saints." When an answer was of fered by them it was invariably a misinterpreted and/or out of context and/or irrelevant verse Oregon daily m . emerald The Oregon Deity Emerald is published Monday ihrough Fri day encept during «>am wees and vacations by me Oregon Daily Emerotd Publishing Co at the University ot Oregon Eugene OB 97403 The Emerald ope'ales independently ot the University with o» • ices on the third tloor ot the E its Memorial Union and is a member ot the Associated Press Qeneral Staff Advertising Manager Classified Advertising Production Manager Controller Susan Theten Larry Swanson Victoria Koch Jean Own bey Ad Seles Bechet Bellamy Crndt Btagg Louie Outstay Bon Gnose David Kosse Jo Meeks Huberts Olive' Bit hard S*ee« Production. After a few such attempts to question the zealots, one was forced to find them as incredibly humorous as they were nauseating and frightening. However, Jed and Cindy are not nearly as frighten ing as those people who hold beliefs similar to theirs but are not certifiably insane. If anything, these two together did more to under mine the so called Moral Majori ty than if Jerry Falwell got caught coming out of a brothel. It is my belief that, at least for a few moments, they pulled the right and the left of this campus closer together (fortunately to the left). When was the last time on this campus that Greeks, hip pies, punks, preppies, homosex uals, etc. were all in agreement on anything of even a remotely philosophical nature? And it was rather amusing as well. So, J. Morrel don't worry too much about our supposed lack of caring. We still care, we just know how to tell a joke from a real threat. Tony Gianellia junior, sociology To bike thieves I'm not big on making idle threats but to you, who stole my bike on Saturday night, I give this warning that karma is going to take you for a ride someday so painful you won't have the balls to rip off another bike (literally) again. Karma works in weird ways: it might be a bus ready to cut you off into a crack waiting in the road to send your face into the gutter just as a St. Vincent de Paul truck snaps all your bones like a rabbit's; or it might have eons of patience and wait until you're enjoying the grandeur of success and then POOF it will set fire to your catbird seat leav ing you tearing up the pea patch with little more gained then some respect for Karma. Pedal softly. Erin Shilliday architecture 1 more time This may be considered an open letter to Leah Juniper and Jet Harris. I am getting bored with the jive rationalization that when women use sexist terms they are teaching and enlightening. Bullshit, sisters. All you are doing is answering sexism with sexism. You say in your reply to my letter regarding the EMU sign that what you real ly want is the use of non-gender words when referring to the human race. You had a golden opportunity to use such words when you held your demonstra tion. Which is to say you had a golden opportunity to enlighten and set a positive example. And you blew it. The best you were able to do was show you're just as sexist as men. Hey, congratulations. But I can't say I'm suprised. After all, an drogyny is the word these days. And what is this business of referring to Eric Stillwell and myself with the condescending term ''boys?'' At some point, needless provocation degenerates into childishness. I suggest you're perilously close to that point. You say the ultimate goal is genderless terminology. I say the ultimate goal is freedom and respect for the individual. Your obligation to be respectful of Stillwell and me is no less than our obligation to be respectful of you. When you mature enough to realize that, you will have gained some personal enlightenment. Sam McClure graduate, psychology Editor's note: due to a mix up with dual submissions this letter is being rerun. Speaking for It appears strange to us that the two Europeans quoted on the front page of the April 9 Emerald are represented by Paul Ertelt as speaking for the entire European population. How can he assume that two out of 250,000,000 persons contribute a representative segment of the aforesaid population? Perhaps it is also worth mentioning that having lived most of our adult lives in Europe, we must confess to never having heard of the European Democratic Students. Have you? Has Ertelt? Public opinion polls in West Germany last year indicated that 70 percent of the adult popula tion opposed deployment of the new missiles. In West Germany last October, 1.3 million people took the trouble to participate in a nationwide demonstration against these additional nuclear arms on their soil. It is signifi cant that Ertelt's sources are sponsored by a Republican group. The headline “Euro peans say freeze is wrong and stupid" is a classic instance (though rare in the Emerald) of the prodeployment bias of much American media.
