Athletic department charges $10 fee to summer students Summer session students who wish to use the University’s athletic facilities but are not taking any physical educa tion classes will be charged a $10 user fee, says Norval Ritchey, assistant dean of the human development and perfor mance college. The temporary fee will help fill in the economic hole left when the state system dropped funding for the col lege's "gym-suit service” budget spring term. Prior to then, all University students, regardless of whether they were taking “service” courses or using the athletic facilities in Esslinger or Gerlinger Halls, were charged a mandatory $3 “gym-suit service fee,” which was tacked onto their tuition. Students enrolled in PE courses sum mer term will not be charged the fee because they pay a mandatory $20 fee per PE course when they register. “We’re sorry we have to charge the fee,” Ritchey says. Without it, the col lege could lose about $50,000. There have been few complaints about the new fee. “But no one likes it.
