WSWW7S5 XHHKv Environmentalists protest road More than 30 members and sym pathizers of the environmental group Earth First staged a peaceful march yesterday, parading from the EMU to the Federal Building in downtown Eugene. The purpose of the march accor ding to Mike Roselle, one of the march organizers, was to call attention to the group’s blockade of Forest Service at tempts to build a road in the Bald Mt. area of Southern Oregon. Roselle, coordinator of the blockade, says Earth First wants to stop construction of the road to save old growth timber in the forest and the only way to do that is to show the people of the state and country they are serious. “We’re trying to use nonviolent direct intervention,’’ he says, adding that the only law the group has broken is disorderly conduct. Photo by Mark Pynes University lauds student poets University News Bureau Eleven University students and recent graduates have been chosen to receive annual awards in fiction and poetry from the English department. Eliot Knight, a senior in fine and applied arts, won $25 in the Alicia Wood Poetry Con test for “In Terms of Spring.” Alan Isaacs, a senior English major, received $75 for his poem “El Porvenir” in the Walter and Nancy Kidd Poetry Contest. The award was established by the late Waiter Kidd, a University alumnus who wrote under the pen name Conrad Pendleton, and his widow Nancy, also a Universi ty alumna. Peg Peoples, a senior English major, received honorable mention in the Kidd poetry content for “The Year Grandmother Died. James Heyunderickx, a sophomore English major, received $75 in the Walter and Nancy Kidd Fiction Contest for “Fountain of Ice.” Allyson Barricklow, a spring 1983 graduate in French, received honorable mention for “Idyll” in the Kidd fiction contest. Donna Nelson, a spring 1983 cum laude graudates in English, was the recipient of the $25 Julia Burgess Award in poetry for “Drearn No. 1” The award honors the memory of a former University English pro fessor whose collection of rare and early printed books is in the University Library’s collections. Ami Pate received honorable mention in the Burgess contest for her poem “He Sold Neon." Kathleen Hart, an English major, won the $50 Graduate Poegram Award in Poetry. Ross West, a creative wrting student, received the $50 Graduate Program Award in fiction. Patricia Shepard Matteri and Janice Frey, both spring 1983 master of fine arts graduates in creative writing, received honorable mention in the Graduate Program fiction contest. YMCA offers fitness workshop for novices The Eugene YMCA is offer ing a one-day Fitness Leaders’ Workshop July 30 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for people in terested in starting a fitness program. The workshop, featuring speakers from around the state, will focus on principles of fitness, anatomy and exer cise physiology, program plan ning and teaching techniques. The importance of class at moshpere, motivational train r ing, injury prevention and emergency procedures will be discussed. Participants will be certified as YMCA Fitness Leaders.
