Chemistry prof wins fellowship David Herrick, a University chemist, is among the 292 scholars, scientists and artists to receive Guggenheim fellowships to pursue research during the 1983-84 school year. A theoretical chemical physicist, Herrick will spend one year on “Studies of New Symmetry Properties of Atoms and Molecules.” He expects to spend at least half the time doing more concentrated research at his University laboratory and the rest of the year in consultation with research colleagues elsewhere in the United States. Herrick is the fifth University faculty member in five years to receive a Gug genheim fellowship. Altogether, 38 current members of the faculty have held these prestigious research awards. Guggenheim fellows are selected for their "demonstrated accomplish ment in the past and strong promise for the future.” Some 3,571 applicants were considered in the foundation’s 59th annual competition which selected recipients at 102 U.S. and Canadian institutions for fellowships totalling $5.54 million. Herrick earned his bachelor’s degree with distinction from the University of Rochester in 1969 and his doctoral degree from Yale University in 1973. Herrick joined the University faculty in 1975.
