WPPSS legal expenses equal $15 million SEATTLE (AP) — The Washington Public Power I Supply System expects to spend $15 million on legal < expenses this year and while members of the system’s executive board feel WPPSS is getting its money’s worth, they are looking at ways to hold down costs. < Board members were briefed on the supply « system’s legal expenses last week and suggestions i ranged from beefing up WPPSS in-house legal staff to I signing contracts with outside legal firms that include « specific cost ceilings. t The supply system is currently involved in 66 ac tive cases, said Arlan Lund of the supply system’s 1 egal staff. Of those, the supply system is the defen Jant in 56, he said. “We are in a reactive stance,” said Lund. Twenty-one of the 66 cases involve the supply .ystem's two terminated nuclear power plants, Lund laid. WPPSS is spending almost $500,000 a month for ts own legal expenses and those of Chemical Bank of Jew York in a suit aimed at determining whether the 88 itilities that sponsored the abandoned plants will have o pay for them. The suit was filed by Chemical Bank, bond trustee or the terminated plants, against WPPSS and the utilities. Even though WPPSS was named a defendant in the suit, it is required to pay the bank’s legal fees under the bond sale agreements. For the fiscal year ending June 30, WPPSS will have spent $15 million on legal fees, said Lund. During fiscal 1984, the supply system expects legal services to cost $8.8 million. Lund estimated that through the end of the decade, WPPSS could spend almost $40 million, with more than $32 million spent on hiring legal firms, ac countants and researchers outside the supply system.
