Sports Mitchell leads Spurs over Lakers, 117-112 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mike Mitchell scored 26 points and Artis Gilmore had 25 Wednes day night as the San Antonio Spurs narrowed the Los Angeles Lakers' lead in their National Basketball Associa tion playoff series to one game with a 117-112 victory. The Spurs’ triumph sends the best-of-seven series back to San Antonio for Game 6 Fri day night, with the Lakers leading 3-2. A seventh game, if necessary, would be in Los Angeles on Sunday. The winner of the Western Conference final will meet Philadelphia, which whipped Milwaukee 115-103 to win the Eastern crown Wednesday, 4-1. The Lakers-Spurs contest at The Forum was close almost all the way, with the Spurs leading 95-91 heading into the final period. After Los Angeles pulled ahead 100-99 3V2 minutes into the fourth quarter, the Spurs ran off an 8-0 string to build a 107-100 lead, an advantage they never relinquished. The Lakers narrowed the gap to 110-113 with 2V2 minutes left, but were held to just two points the rest of the way. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar paced Los Angeles with 30 points and Jamaal Wilkes added 27. Johnny Moore added 23 points for the Spurs and George Ger vin had 20. Ironically, both the Spurs’ victories in the playoff series have come at the Forum, while the Lakers swept a pair of games in San Antonio last weekend. Los Angeles’ Earvin “Magic” Johnson had 16 points, 19 assists and 11 re bounds in the loss. Moore, in addition to his scoring, dished out 17 assists for the Spurs. Brock’s grand slam keys L.A. over Expos MONTREAL (AP) — Rookie Greg Brock drove in six runs with a grand slan. and a two-run homer, highlighting a 14-hit at tack that carried the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 13-3 pasting of the Montreal Expos Wednesday night. The Dodgers led 3-1 in the fifth when Brock drilled his grand slam off Bill Gullickson, 3-5. Los Angeles had loaded the bases when pitcher Burt Holton walked, Ken Landreaux singled and Pedro Guerrero walked. After Brock's blast, his first career grand slam, Expos Manager Bill Virdon engaged in a heated argument with home plate umpire Joe West that ended with Virdon being ejected. The argument had started when Virdon visited the mound following Guerrero’s walk and West moved in to break up the manager’s discussion with Gullickson. Giants 8, Phillies 1 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jack Clark belted a grand slam and drove in six runs Wednesday night as the San Francisco Giants downed the Philadelphia Phillies 8-1 for their 11th victory in the last 13 games. Mike Krukow, traded by the Phillies to San Francisco before the season started, gave up five hits in stx innings in evening his record at 2-2. Greg Minton pitched three scoreless innings in relief to gain his fifth save.
