Entering the political arena College Republican aims to win national position By Frank Shaw Of Hm EnwraM A University political science major is put ting what he’s learned into practice as a can didate for a College Republican National Com mittee position. Political science senior Chris Little is the only West Coast candidate running for the CNRC’s first vice-chairman position, which Lit tle says someitmes can be “innocous”. “But I don’t want the job to be a resume filler," he says. The election happens in Washington D.C., June 23-26, when about 125 delegates select the national officers. Three other candidates for first vice chairman are from Ohio, Mississippi and North Carolina, and Little hopes to capitalize on the fact that he is the only West Coast candidate. Little plans to set up a West Coast office of College Republicans, probably in Sacramen to, Calif. “Why not use it (College Republicans) to be a help to the party In other states out here?” he asks. Little also would try to set up internships and work with legislators to increase student awareness of local legislative issues. “You hear students yell about the draft, but they don't realize the city just raised the amusement tax,” he says. So what motivates someone to run for a national office in College Republicans? “I’ve put so much time and effort into it (College Republicans) that I just don’t want to walk away from it," Little says. He helped start the University and state College Republican clubs and worked for the CRNC as a “student fieldman instructor," visiting campuses, establishing clubs and teaching students to be more involved politically. “We tried to get the student vote out,” he says. Little says the program recruited as many as 2,000 students in Utah alone. Chris Little Little then worked for the second largest conservative, direct-mail fund-raising firm and took a position in the office of Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. In one week of fundraising, Little raised $600 for his election campaign and hopes to bring in $5,000 by the campaign's end. The money will go for mailings to delegates, phone calls, brochure printing costs and a hotel room during the elections. If he gets elected, Little would try to establish more conservative college papers like the Dartmouth Review and the Stanford Review. “Like a city with only one paper, you only get one point of view,” he says. “You need that other perspective if you're going to make deci sions correctly.” ODE editorial staff selected Sandy Johnstone, a senior in journalism, was named managing editor of the Oregon Daily Emerald for the 1983-84 academic year. Frank Shaw, also a senior in journalism, was named news editor. Johnstone, currently the Emerald’s associate editor for higher education, came to the University from Portland where she attended Mt. Hood Community College. Shaw, currently the Emerald’s associate editor for departments and schools, is from Saratoga, Calif. He has been at the University for three years. As managing editor, Johnstone will direct the day to-day operation of the Emerald and direct a staff of 14 editors and about 20 freelance writers. Shaw will be responsible for editing copy and organizing a copy desk. “Both are capable jour nalists and will make a substantial contribution to next year’s paper.” said Deb bie Howlett, the 1983-84 editor.
