Pressure low for Twilight By Doug Levy Of fh« Emerald After a grueling season of dual meets, the Oregon men’s and women’s track teams will get a chance to compete under less pressure Saturday at the coed Twilight Meet. “This is a chance for some people to run fast in a low pressure meet," says Oregon women’s coach Tom Heinonen. In addition to being a change of pace for the athletes, the meet is designed as a treat for the fans. “Our first goal for this meet is to help us get ready for Pac-10’s (next week),” says Oregon men’s assistant coach John Gillespie, “and our aux iliary goal is to entertain the fans.” One event fans alway look forward to is the annual Twilight Mile. In the 13 times the Twilight Mile has been contested, the winner of the race has broken the four minute barrier 11 times. Last year Jim Hill had that honor, winning in 3:56.41. This year Dub Myers will lead six Ducks taking aim at a sub-four clocking. "I think he has a chance at it,” says Gillespie. “The pro blem is that he's not a pacesetter, so hopefully someone will take him out.” Meanwhile Hill, redshirting this season, is set to run the 3,000 meters, where he'll shoot for Rudy Chapa’s 1979 meet record of 7:37.7. Three Ducks — weightmen Dean Crouser, Kent Landerholm and Steve Davis — will forsake the Twilight Meet to compete in the California Relays at Modesto. “There will be a lot of com petition for them down there,” says Gillespie. “Dean, in par ticular, has not met anyone this year.” Oregon 800 and 1,500-meter star Joaquim Cruz will not be in the meet (“we’d rather have him rested for Pac-10’s,” says Gillespie), and injuries will keep distance runners John Zishka and Greg Erwin on the sidelines. On the women’s side, the meet will provide hurdler Lisa Nicholson and discus thrower Melanie Morrison one last chance to reach NCAA qualifying marks before next week’s NorPac meet. “Lisa ran a 61.3 (in the 400 hurdles) last week before she was disqualified," says Heinonen, ‘‘and that’s a dramatic improvement for her this season.” Nicholson’s lifetime best in the event is 60.17, just off the qualifying standard of 60.0. For Morrison, who has a best of 154-8, the mark to reach is 164-0. “She fouled at 160 against Oregon State last week, so the distance is there,” says Heinonen. Heinonen also lists Carla Johnson in the 800 meters as shooting for the NCAA qualify ing mark of 2:08.24 Saturday. The race to watch for the women should be the 3,000 meters, where Oregon distance ace Kathy Hayes will take on 1980 Olympian Julie Brown from the Adidas Track Club in Los Angeles. Brown qualified for the 800 and 1,500 meters in 1980, and she is also the owner of the fourth fastest women’s marathon clocking ever. “She's the most versatile women's track and field athlete around,” says Heinonen. As is the case with the men, three Oregon women will travel south for heated com petition. Sprinter-hurdler Lexie Miller Beck, javelin thrower Roz Rouse and school record holder in the shotput Quenna Beasley will be in LA at the Pepsi-Invitational meet. “If they want competition, they’ll have it there,” says Heinonen. “Quenna (with a best of 52-1 Vi) will be looking at 54 to 60-foot throwers.” The Twilight Meet will get underway with the hammer throw at 5:30 p.m. and end at 8:15 p.m. with the Twilight Mile. Club Sports Oregon'* crew team will be looking lor it s second straight strong showing at the Pacific Northwest Regionals this weekend in Seattle. Oregon is one ol 28 schools competing In the event. Other teams In the running include Oregon State, Washington, Washington State and the University of Victoria. Oregon is hoping to clain the Lafromboise Cup as the top team in the heavy 8 competition, as well as defending its title in the men’s light-4 and women's light-4 The Oregon rugby dub, after being presented with the Oregon Rugby Union's championship trophy for completing league play with a perfect 13-0 record, club earned a 2-2 mark In the Portland Rugby Tournament last weekend In that competition Oregon gained wins over a club from Davis, Calif. and Utah State The Oregon club will host an alumni game Saturday at Southbank Field beginning at 1 p.m. The Oregon table tennis club wrapped up the Oregon college league title last weekend Oregon finished the season with an 8-1 record ❖ !LIJ V/ ► ♦ ) /A I Tempt your tastebuds with Middle Eastern Foods from CASABLANCA with Many Varieties of pocket sandwiches including: Chicken, Falafel, Beef Kabob, Syrian Cheese, and many others.
