ASUO selects new directors Four directors and two co-directors were selected for ASUO President-elect Mary Hotchkiss’ administration after interviews last weekend, Kevin Kouns, ASUO vice president-elect, announced Monday. A four-person hiring committee, which included Hot chkiss, Kouns, Sherri Schultz, acting executive assistant and Alan Contreras, former comptroller and a former ASUO vice president, selected Sheila Schain, a political science senior, as finance director. Schain ran for ASUO vice president with ASUO presidential-candidate David Gibson during the recent ASUO elections. Sheila is ASUO budget director, an intern for state Sen. Margie Hendriksen, a former Incidental Fee Commit tee member and former director of the Jewish Student Union. Because two applicants were so qualified, the hiring committee selected co-directors for the student events position, Kouns said. William Snyder, a psychology junior, and Laurel Singer, a master’s counseling student, will share duties, he said. Snyder is assistant director of SEARCH, a member of Students for a Nuclear Free Future and a former Students for a Progressive Agenda candidate for the EMU Board. Singer has done much work in human services and organized some events for Citizens Action for Lasting Security, he said. Patricia Stuart, a psychology sophomore, will head the state affairs office. Stuart has worked with Black Stu dent Union, Gay and Lesbian Alliance, CALS and People for South African Freedom and is an older, returning stu dent, Kouns said. Gary Okazaki, a finance junior, will be director of University affairs. Okazaki was elected to the President’s Advisory Council, is a member of a fraternity and is co-director of the Asian-American Student Union. Bill Hallmark, a psychology sophomore, will be direc tor of program development. Hallmark has done budgeting and program management work for SNuFF. Applications open today for assistant director of University affairs, administrative assistant for student events, an editor for the ASUO newspaper and an ex ecutive assistant. The office will accept applications until 4 p.m. Satur day, Kouns said. Symposium celebrates physics retiree’s 70th Talks by Nobel and Pulitzer prize winners will highlight a University physics symposium May 19-20. The symposium, which is in honor of retired University Physicist Gregory Wannier’s 70th birthday, will feature scientists who will describe present work in Wannier’s areas of interest, says Richard Contest stirs math interest More than 220 students from throughout Oregon will par ticipate in the third annual Oregon Invitational Mathematics Contest May 17. The day-long contest, which begins at 9 a.m. in the Univer sity Law Center, is designed to promote student enthusiasm for mathematics, says Alan Holler, University math pro fessor and contest coordinator. Higgins, a University physics professor and event organizer. Wannier, who is the author of “Elements of Solid State Theory” and “Statistical Physics,” conducted much of the fundamental research for crystalline systems necessary for transistors and computers and for the amorphous materials for solar cells. Indiana University Prof. Douglas Hofstadter, a Univer sity alumnus and author of the 1979 Pulitzer Prize-winning book “Goedel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid," will speak at 8 p.m. May 19 at the Eugene Conference Center. Hofstadter’s talk, titled “The Concept of Recursion in Nature and Art,” is part of the free Forum Lecture Series. Nobelist P.W.
