Eugene set to honor preserved buildings Eugene's historic downtown buildings will be the focus of a city celebration of Natural Historic Preservation Week begin ning Sunday. Volunteers from the city planning staff, the Junior League and the historic review board will distribute brochures for self guided walking tours of 13 historic buildings in the central downtown area. Tours will begin between 1 and 5 p.m. Sunday from former Ax Billy Department Store at 10th Avenue and Willamette Street. “The city is trying to coordinate with the national event to create more public awareness of history," says Pat Decker, Eugene historic preservation officer. Three buildings, the Ax Billy building, the McDonald Theatre, and the Schaefers building all were placed on the Na tional Register of Historic Landmarks within the last year. A slide show on Eugene history will be shown every 20 minutes after the hour from 1:20 to 4:20 p.m. in the Ax Billy store. Members of the city’s Junior League, dressed in turn-of-the century costumes, will show the slides. An exhibit of historic preservation activities will be on display at the Lane County Museum next week from Wednesday through Saturday. The museum, located at 740 W. 13th St., is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. New election held — with same result I Karin Keutzer defeated Bruce Carey 50-14 to win a special election held Tuesday and Wednesday for the Student University Affairs Board telecommunic at ion/speech/theatre position. Paul Rudinsky, ASUO executive vice presi dent and elections director, invalidated Keutzer’s 384-358 general election victory about two weeks ago because just 598 students are enrolled in the departments. Poll workers used a computer-printout sheet to double check eligible voters at the Villard Hall voting booth. Fewer students, 64, voted in the special election than the 166 students who voted in the primary elections about three weeks ago. The ASUO Elections Court allowed Carey to put up just one poster during the special election campaign because he violated an elec tion rule prohibiting candidates from placing more than one poster on a bulletin board. Keutzer replaces incumbent David Bauer, who was eliminated from the race in the primary election. The special election con cludes the ASUO elections. Dorm residents can pre-register for 1983-84 Current dormitory residents will get a chance to reserve a room for the 1983-84 academic year during a pre-registration period next week, say Univer sity housing office officials. Marge Ramey, assistant housing director, says students may choose from the remaining dormitory rooms available for next year. The housing office will accept reservations on Tuesday and Wednesday from those who now reside in a dormitory. Earlier this week, current residents were given a chance to reserve their same rooms for next year. Dormitory residents will pay the same rates for single and multiple rooms next year as they did this year, Ramey says. A single dormitory room costs $2762 and a multiple room costs $2127. A single Universi ty Inn room costs $3587. Slide show focuses on hunger A documentary slide show entitled “Hunger in Lane Coun ty” will be shown at 4 p.m. Friday in the Koinonia Center library. Donna Getch of Lane County Clients’ Council will present the free show, sponsored by Bread for the World, a hunger ac tion group.
