But what wasn’t expected was Oregon outjumping the Salukis. Southern Illinois came to Hayward Field well stocked in the long jump and triple jump, but nobody told LaMar Hurd and Uchenna Agu they weren’t supposed to win. Hurd passed his lifetime best by more than six inches to win the long jump at 25-0, and Agu won the triple jump with a leap of 50-7Vi, a personal best by more than a foot. “We got the points we thought we'd get, but the way we got some of those points wasn't expected,” said Oregon coach Bill Dellinger. "I was pleased to see LaMar and Agu winning." “I was just concentrating on getting height, and with the wind I knew I could get off a good jump,” said Hurd, whose jump will go down as wind-aided. Agu, meanwhile, continues to shatter his personal bests in the triple jump by huge margins. Against Cal, the freshman broke his PR by nearly a foot, leaping 49-4’/2 to finish second, and Saturday he improved another 15 inches. Agu is enjoying his success, and he sees no end in sight to his improvement. “I don’t like to set any limits for myself, because then if I reach my goal, I won’t want to go any farther,” he said. In addition to personal bests in the jumps, the Ducks recorded some PR’s on the track. Dub Myers, Dellinger’s prize freshman, took the 1,500 meters in a lifetime best 3:45.17. Mike Blackmore lowered his time 30 seconds to win the 5,000 in 14:20.08, and Matt McGuirk was a strong winner in his first steeplechase run, clocking an 8:52.14. "It was my idea,” said McGuirk, who has been running the 5,000 for Dellinger all season. “Ever since high school I’ve thought about running the steeple chase.” McGuirk made his idea look brilliant, passing USI's Tom Ross with a torrid last lap, and his performance left Dellinger with a pleasing problem. “He ran a very good steeplechase, so at this time I’m not sure which he'll run at the Pac-10.” said Dellinger. As usual, George Walcott was sharp in the sprints for Oregon, winning the 100 meters in 10.48 and finishing second behind USI’s touted Mike Franks in the 200. In the weight events, Dean Crouser was a double winner (shot 62-111/2, discus 194-3), and brother Brian finished third in the javelin, throwing 124-11 — lefthanded. And of course, the Ducks took their lumps in the relays, but it didn’t matter. “I thought we had too much depth for them,’’ said Dellinger. “We simply outclassed them in the weight events.” Unfortunately, injuries may thin out the depth Dellinger covets. Brian Crouser probably won’t throw the javelin again until Pac-10’s, ditto for Frode Stormyr. Sprinter Parrish Nixon is out for the rest of the year, and Dellinger admitted Saturday that hurdler Dwight Robertson may never come all the way back from a troubling groin injury. “We’re still having a lot of problems with injuries," said Dellinger, "but we’ve had those injuries all year, and we’re not doing too bad with the guys we’ve got.” Southern Illinois would agree with that. Oregon State’s dynamic pitching duo of Trina Marvin and Joan Harvey blanked Oregon by identical scores of 1-0 in sweeping the Ducks in a women’s soft ball doubleheader Sunday at Oregon field. EUGENE (AP) — Mary Decker set an American record in the women’s 10,000-meter loop run Sunday, winning in 31 minutes, 51.2 seconds. Her effort broke the old mark of 32:04 held by Jan Merrill. The race, sponsored by the Oregon Track Club, is run on a course that winds through bicycle paths along the Willamette River. The winning runner had been going by the name Mary Decker-Tabb, but she said Beavers blank softballers in doubleheader The losses dropped Oregon’s record to 6-17. Marvin won the first game by limiting Oregon to five hits in posting the shutout. Duck pitcher Stephanie Heisler spun a five-hitter herself, but a OSU run in the third frame spelled her demise. In the nightcap, Harvey was just as ef fective in putting the bag over the Ducks as she allowed only three hits and struck out seven. Tami Cadwell who pitched for Ducks allowed only three hits, but two of those came in first when OSU scored their only run on a RBI single by Cyndi Miles. “The first inning was really stupid of me,” Caldwell said. “I knew she was a good hitter (Miles) and gave her a pitch which she hit up the middle.” Confidence was all the Ducks had as they swept a twinbill against Lewis and Clark on Saturday by the margins of 5-0 and 9-0 at Oregon Field. The Ducks broke loose from their dormant offense with nine hits in the second game. i Decker sets U.S. record she wished to be known only as Mary Decker from now on. She recently separated from her husband, marathon runner Ron Tabh. It was Decker's second race of the out door season. She ran 800 meters as part of a relay team at the Mount Sacramento Relays last weekend.
