Novick offers DersDectives on arms race Four decades of personal in volvement with the issue of nuclear arms control will be reflected Sunday by Aaron and Jane Novick. The Novicks begin a three part series on the subject at the Unitarian Church of Eugene, 477 E. 40th Ave., at 7 p.m. Aaron, former dean of the University graduate school and now head of the biology department, participated in the Manhattan Project, which developed the first atomic bomb in the early 1940s. Jane Novick, who also was at Oak Ridge and Los Alamos during the critical years of the project, worked with the Eugene Future Power Commit tee in 1970 to stop the nuclear plant that was proposed by the Eugene Water and Electric Board. The subject of the Novick's free presentation is “The Nuclear Arms Race: Personal Perspectives." May 15, history professor Thomas Brady will address “The Roman Catholic Bishops’ Letters on Nuclear Arms Control.” Student club sets blood drive for next week The University Blood Donor Club will conduct a blood drive for the Lane Memorial Blood Bank next week in the EMU. Students, faculty and staff ages 17-70 who are in good health can donate a pint of blood between Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 167 EMU. Donors should eat a low-fat meal two hours before giving blood and should not con tribute more than once in an eight-week period. The blood can be donated to the UBDC or to a specified in dividual who needs blood, says Linda King, benefits ad ministrator for the club. All blood will go directly to the LMBB for use in area hospitals. Whether or not they donate, all students, faculty and staff and their spouses and children may request blood for medical purposes. The Univer sity donor club currently has 400 pints of blood on reserve, says King. Donors wishing to make an appointment to give blood should call Charlotte Gordon at ext. 3159 by today. Drop-in donors will also be accepted next week. Free lectures cover teaching roles, trends A free public lecture on the role and performance of elementary education in America is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Valley River Inn. Leanna Landsmann, editor and publisher of The Instruc tor magazine, will speak on a recent magazine poll of elementary school teachers as well as outline current perspectives and trends in elementary education. Landsmann will also ad dress University faculty and students from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday in Room 136 Educa tion. She will discuss publishing opportunities in education.
