Prof garners award to study film makers University New* Bureau A University telecommunications professor has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship to study German at the Goethe Institute in Bremen, West Germany, from July 4 through Aug. 27. Ellen Seiter, assistant telecommunications and film professor in the speech department, will use the German Academic Exchange Service scholarship to pay partial liv ing expenses and tuition for “Learn German in Germany,” a course allowing her to study German film making. The Goethe Institute, an international group of agen cies giving seminars to promote research and study of German culture, awards scholarships to university faculty during the summer months, Seiter says. Seiter, who has taught at the University for two years, teaches a class in women film makers in association with the Women’s Studies program. Seiter says there is a “big movement of women film makers in Germany," noting many of these women have received national acclaim. Police beat Recent campus-area crimes reported to Eugene Police in cluded the following: The Food-Op market on Agate Street was apparently burglarized last Friday, accor ding to Officer Mike Larion. A calculator, a coffee maker and some onion bread were found missing. Larion estimated the stolen property was valued at $30-$40. No suspects have been found in the incident, Larion said. The University Center for Widowed Services reported about $200 worth of property stolen last weekend from the center’s Agate Street office. A phone recording machine and postage stamps were among the articles listed as stolen. An unidentified black male has reportedly been seen crawling on the third floor of the library in the study carrel area, according to Larion. He said police have also received reports that the man has been exposing himself. Police have been unable to identify the man or to determine whether he is a student. The reports about the man have come in during the past two months, said Larion. Police need more information to learn whether he has com mitted a crime. Larion urged anyone who sees the man to report him to campus security. A wallet, a jacket, tennis ra quets, and ping-pong balls were among items a student reported stolen last Friday from Esslinger Hall, according to Officer Gary Elliott. Personal files and an ap pointment book were ap parently stolen last Friday from the Suite 4 EMU office of John Moore, coordinator for the ASUO student advocacy office. The property was worth about $360, said Elliott. Six bicycles were reported stolen from campus during the past week. Arms control, Soviet threat subject of talk Robin Ranger, an associate professor at the University of Southern California, will speak on the Soviet threat and nuclear arms control on Sun day at 1 p.m. in Room 150 Geology as part of Ground Zero Week. Ranger is replacing Laurence Beilenson, who was originally scheduled to speak Sunday. Ranger is a graduate of the London School of Economics and the author of “Arms and Politics 1958-1978: Arms Con trol in a Changing Political Context.” Ranger is currently an assistant to William VanCleave, who was the direc tor of Pres. Ronald Reagan’s Defense Department Transi tion Team and a member of the Committee for the Present Danger. Ground Zero Week activities include a speech Monday by Arthur Cox, a consultant tc the first nuclear test-ban treaty and SALT II, plus films and panel discussions.
