Iff Continued from page IB GOlf The par-3’s are especially tough. An example is the 175-yard 11th. With a pond in front and to the side of the green, and a sand trap behind, it is not for the faint-of-heart or for the fading slice. Escaping with a double-bogey can be a pleasure at times. r.j" The best part of Tokatee may be it's discount to Univer sity students. A validated fee card gets a round for half price, and at $7.50 a shot, it more than makes up for the gas money to get there. It also makes for a nice way to spend a day — a little golf in the morning and an afternoon up by Three Sisters or relaxing at the hot springs near Cougar Resevoir, which is just up the road? What better way to escape the drudgery of school and Eugene? i. j*. i 1 Bring Out Your Best with RIM SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES - SPRING 1983 Starling Date or I vent Date April 1f> April 18 April 23 April 25 April 27 May 3 May 2 May 6 Min./ PUyerv Dr/dlinr Thurs. Another long course that has a lot to offer, the 6,231 par-72 Emerald Valley is in fairly good condi tion. The fairways are dry, but the greens are still soggy. The course annually holds some tough tournaments such as the Oregon Golf Associa tion Medal Championship, and in 1981 it hosted the United States Women’s Public Link Championship. Probably the outstanding hole I found on my little excur sion, as my scorecard will at test, is the 421-yard par-4 fifth hole. The length itself often causes a duffer to make that ill-fated decision to "go for it” off the tee. If you survive that, you’re faced with a long, long second shot that must dissect ponds both to the right and to the left of a green bunkered by sand traps. A definite nightmare for an unwary golfer. Bring plenty of golf balls. Green fees run $8 for nine holes and $13 for 18. Springfield Country CIUD on Mohawk Road in North Springfield. Definitely the up-and-coming course in the area. The already nice 2,842-yard par-35 nine-holer will be supplemented by a new back nine scheduled to open in mid-June. The new nine, a rolling 3,400 yards long, is penned in against a nearby mountain and is "much more difficult" than the existing nine according to club pro Ron Wells. The course is in good shape, and seems to drain the best of the links I toured. Heavy rains and an even heavier hail storm moments before I hit the first tee didn’t affect the course much, though it did make me ques tion what / was doing out there. The semi-private club doesn't fit into any country club stereotype. The course is closed weekends until noon and on Thursday after 4:00 p.m., but otherwise is open to non-members at very com parable prices. Nine holes run $5 on weekdays and $6 on weekends. Oakway Golf Course 2000 Cal Young Road. A nice little course for working on your short game. Only a 3,529-yards long par 61, you really need a driver, wedge and nine-iron for this course, and a good player can get away with a three-wood instead of the driver. But the course can be deceptive if a hacker isn’t wary. A few fairways are nar row and can leave a duffer in trouble if he gets in the rough and is forced to hit from beneath one of the many little trees which line the course. Fortunately winter rules are still in effect and a little foot wedge every once in a while can do wonders for your score. The course is in descent condition with only a few mud dy fairways, and the greens are reasonably dry. The price is a little high con sidering the length — $5 for nine holes and $9 for 18. Laurelwood Golf Course, 2700 Columbia. The availability (less than a mile from campus) and the price make this a popular choice among University students. The course is not difficult, a par-35 only 2,800 yards long, and can boost a golfer’s con fidence before he or she ven tures out to play the more for midable courses in the area. Heavy early season play and even heavier rains makes this less than an ideal course to play. The high clay content of the soil makes it “mucky" at times according to club pro Gary Dutell. Watch your shots because it’s easy to lose the ball in the middle of the fairways. Fortunately, this can also be a blessing. Especially on the made-for-a-duffer 90-degree dogleg right fifth hole. A long tee shot that fades, makes for a perfect approach shot to a green. But when you’re almost hit by an impatient golfer, who lets one rip around the blind corner before you’re out of the way, you can gain satisfaction as the ball disappears in the mud. Of course after you tell the jerk to yell that great guilt remover “fore" next time before he hits, you convenient ly forget exactly where the ball disappeared. Aww, sweet revenge And it was a Titlelist, too. Dr. Robert Anthony THE RESULTS PROGRAM Church of Religious Science "You can only have two things in life - Reasons or Results.
