Bruins sprint past women By Paul Danzer Of Iht Emerald It is hard to argue with UCLA women s track coach Scott Chisam when he says that this year's Bruin squad is his best ever — bet ter than last year's NCAA championship team. He certainly won’t get any arguments from the Oregon women’s team. The Bruins manag ed to dodge the snowflakes and used their speed and depth to take a 71-56 dual meet win at Hayward Field Saturday. “This is nobody's fault,” said Oregon coach Tom Heinonen, admitting that he will be glad to see the stockpile of Bruin seniors leave Los Angeles. "They’re just an awfully good track team, and we’re not playing with a full deck right now.” Heinonen was referring to injuries which have put five of Oregon’s top performers on hold. One more Duck was added to the list when javelin standout Lynda Hughes strained her elbow in practice last week. All those holes would be tough to fill against anybody, but it proved impossible against the defending national champions. Injuries did give Roz Rouse the opportuni ty to earn her first win in the javelin. Rouse, who missed last week’s dual meet with Washington, earned the victory with a personal best of 171-9 on her first effort of the afternoon. “All week I could feel it,” Rouse said of her throw, which came after a good week of prac tice. She joked that it “was nice of Lynda to take a week off” so that she could finally get a win under her belt. Rouse was one of four Ducks who came up with top personal performances. One of the others was Quenna Beasley, who did it in the shot put with a meet-record toss of 51-41/< to win the event. Others who came through with PR’s were freshman Kim Roth, who finished third in the 1,500 with a time of 4:23.94, and senior Allison Snow, who clock ed a time of 9:40.49 as a non-scoring com petitor in the 3,000 meters. Lexie Miller Beck posted a meet record by winning the 400-meter hurdles in 59.02, and Shari Collins did the same in the high jump with a leap of 5-9V4. But those Oregon efforts weren't enough to derail the Bruins. The way the Bruins won was no surprise. They did it by dominating the sprints. The Bruins took the top two spots in the 100, 200, and 400 meters, and cruised to wins in the 400-meter and mile relays. Those events gave UCLA almost half of its points. The Bruins padded their cushion with back-to-back breakthroughs in the 1,500 and 100-meter hurdles. UCLA's Polly Plumer out kicked Oregon’s Kathy Hayes to win the 1,500 in meet-record time of 4:20.19. Hayes had earlier led a quartet of Oregon runners across the finish line in the 3,000. In the 100 hurdles, Lexie Miller Beck got a slow start and couldn’t catch UCLA’s Jackie Joyner, who reached the finish line in a meet record 14.02. “They just have too much sprint power," said Heinonen. "You can’t run everybody in every event. I thought we had a good meet.” Netters slam Portland State, 7-2 Riding the strength of five straight singles victories, the Oregon men’s tennis defeated Portland State University, 7-2, Friday, to rebound from a tough, 5-4 loss to the Universi ty of Portland Thursday. “I was pleased to see us come back and win off a downer (the Portland loss)," said coach Buzz Summers. Don Hallock got the Ducks started with a straight set vic tory over Jeff Wood 6-4, 6-3. Todd DeNeffe, Wade Judy, Ron Elvin, Ron Coron then pro ceeded to pick up wins, with Judy and Coron winning in straight sets, while DeNeffe and Elvin had to go three sets. “Portland State was a much improved team over last year,” said Summers. “You can tell by all the three set matches we had.” Lawrence Lee of Portland State picked up their only singles win defeating Ted Hat field, filling in for the injured Rusty Dysart, in three sets,3-6,6-3,6-4. In the doubles action, Oregon picked up two wins. “In doubles we are fighting hard, but we just don’t have some of the basic concepts down yet, we're just not play ing all that smart,” said Summers. DeNeffe and Dysart are both expected back for today’s match with Willamette. Hill first in fast 10,000 Oregon redshirt Jim Hill swept past a star studded field, including world recorder Henry Rono on his way to winning an exhibition 10,000-meter run Saturday after the Oregon UCLA track meet. Hill had little trouble as he clocked the ninth fastest U.S. time ever of 27:55.23 in run ning away from Athletic West’s Pat Porter and Dan Dillion who finished second and third. Rono ran a disapointing 29:40.01 and was lapped by Hill. Salazar comes in fifth Alberto Salazar lost his first marathon Saturday in four attempts at the Rotterdam Marathon, finishing fifth to Robert Cestella of Australia who clocked a time 2:08.37. Salazar stayed with the leaders, but faded at the end to finish in 2:10.08. Blazers lose: 102-93 PORTLAND (AP) — Gus Williams scored 28 points and helped ignite a second-half surge that lifted the Seattle SuperSonics to a 102-93 National Basket ball Association victory Sunday night over the struggling Portland Trail Blazers. The victory, which clinched a playoff berth for the Sonics, was their seventh in a row and their 14th in the last 16 games. Portland dropped its third in a row and fell to just one game ahead of Kansas City and Denver in the battle for the final two playoff berths in the Western Conference. The Sonics outscored Portland 16-6 over the finai two minutes and 36 seconds of the game. Veteran guard Phil Smith had six points, including two iong-range field goals, in the final Sonic outburst.
