Men hope to trip Bruin dual meet run By Doug Levy Of th« Emerald The Oregon men's track team will be trying to break a streak when they face UCLA Saturday at Hayward Field Forget the old UCLA basketball winning streaks — the Bruin track team hasn't lost a dual meet since 1979 It was 34 dual meets ago that UCLA last lost, and the team that beat them back in 1979 was Oregon. The Ducks, in fact, also knocked off UCLA in 1978 But Oregon, now 2-0 on the season, will be hard pressed to make it three in a row this weekend "They are a very good team," says assistant coach John Gillespie of the Bruins. 9-0 this season "I didn't think they were that good, but then they went and knocked off Tennessee.” "Every event will be important," says Oregon head coach Bill Dellinger. "They have two good 5,000 runners, two good 1,500 runners, two good 800 runners and two good steeplechasers, so those events will be very important for us.” Dellinger figures the meet will come down to Oregon's prowess in the field events against UCLA's excellence in the running events Oregon's 11th-year coach gives the Ducks an edge over UCLA in the hammer, shot, discus, javelin and pole vault, while conceding the hurdles, the 400 and both relays to the Bruins. Another problem for the Ducks is injur ies. Dellinger will be missing several key people on Saturday Frode Stormyr, with a best of 254-0 in the javelin, will miss his third consecutive meet because of a hyper-extended elbow, distance runner Greg Erwin is out with a sore foot, and distance runner John Zishka (bruised foot) and hudler Dwight Robertson (groin) are both questionable for UCLA. "Having not one, but two distance run ners out will really hurt us," says Dellinger "I’d feel a lot better if we had John in there, and we need Dwight Robertson in the hurdles.” As if those aren't enough casualties, Oregon suffered another last week when Parrish Nixon pulled a hamstring in the 100 meters against Washington "Not having Parrish hurts us,” says Dellinger, "because we re losing a man in the 400 and the relays." Several performers will be the key if the Ducks are to upset the Bruins George Walcott must get points in the 100 and 200-meters; Lamar Hurd needs to do the same in the long and triple jumps; and Oregon's freshman corps of Joaquim Cruz, Dub Myers, Matt McGuirk, Harold Kuphaldt and Garth Morrisette must dip into UCLA points in the 800, 1,500, 5,000 and steeplechase. Although he admits his rresnman nave been put under fire sooner than he would have liked, Dellinger says he's pleased with the way they’ve responded. "I’m very pleased with the freshman group,” says Dellinger “They're all run ning very well for this early in the year.” Dellinger also says he’s very impressed with the performances of hammer thrower Ken Flax and pole vaulter Kory Tarpenning. Flax, along with Kent Landerholm and Dean Crouser, could give Oregon a sweep in the hammer, and Tarpenning, who vaulted a personal best of 17-3% last week against Washington, is favored to win the pole vault. Athletes to watch for UCLA are high jumper Del Davis, who holds the American record with a jump of 7-7% and finished second in last year’s NCAA meet, and high hurdler Marcus Allen, who was seventh at the 1982 NCAAs. 1 MEETINGS Aslan American Student Union moats on Mon. in Rm 12, EMU Open to all Interested students Society tor Collegiate Journalists will have a mandatory meeting today at 3:30 p m in Rm, 103 Sheldon Members only Bread For The World meets today at 3:30 p.m. tor worship, with speakers from Gleaners and Gatherers at 4 p m Meeting is held at Koinonia Ctr lounge, 1414 Kincaid All are welcome A Gay Pride Week Collee House will take place at Shell s Restaurant from 7-10 p m on Sun For more information call GALA. x3360 WORKSHOPS "Staying Healthy In the Oregon Outdoors” Is the locus of a five-part series that begins on Tue from 12-1 p m in Conference Rm 3, Eugene Hospital and Clinic The University Counseling Center Is offering the following professionally led groups Spring Term: Here-and-Now Counseling Group, Tues 3 30 p m Coping with Stress.
