By Paul Danzer Of th* Enwild No one can doubt that UCLA will bring a very talented women's track team into Hayward Field Saturday afternoon to challenge the Ducks in a dual meet supreme But there is some mystery surrounding the defending national champion Bruins who come to Eugene with hopes of avenging a 69-58 loss to the Ducks in a dual meet at Los Angeles last spring. Things have been mysteriously quiet down in LA so far this season. Several of the Bruins most dangerous weapons, such as national champions Florence Griffith (200 meters) and Jackie Joyner (heptathlon), have not competed yet this season. But there is little mystery about what the Bruins are capable of doing in the sprints with world class performers like Griffith, Joyner, LaShon Nedd and Jeanette Bolden in the lineup. “It’s a typical Oregon-UCLA matchup,” says Oregon coach Tom Heinonen. "We've got to scramble to get some points in the sprints, where they have world class performers We've got to hit them really hard in the distances, we’ve got to score a bundle from 800 meters up. And we've got to outscore them in the jumps, the hurdles and the throws " It won’t be an easy task It was made even tougher when javelin ace Lynda Hughes was forced to the sidelines with a strained elbow Hughes, the school record holder with a throw of 202-3, will probably be out for two weeks. The good news for the Ducks is that Roz Rouse, who sat out last week's meet against Washington with a bad back after kicking off the season with a heave of 165-9 the week before at California, joins a quartet of Oregon athletes returning to the fold after spending last Saturday on the injured list. Rouse is the Ducks best bet to knock of the Bruins' Susie Ray in the javelin. Ray has a throw of 178-1 to her credit this season. “Ray’s got to be on," says Heinonen. "It’s possible Ray could throw 170 feet and get beat. She's a big meet performer, a real clutch performer so it’s going to be interesting.” Other interesting events will include the high jump, long jump and 400-meter hurdles. Last season the Ducks surprised the Bruins in the high jump. This year there will be no surprises. Shari Collins returns to the Duck fold after sitting out with a bruised heel last week She leads the list of high jumpers with a best of 6-1 indoors. “The high jump is a key event,” says Hein onen. “We need a win in the high jump. But she (Collins) hasn’t jumped for two weeks, so there’s really no telling what’s going to happen." In the long jump it would appear that the Ducks are outmatched. Two Bruins, Joyner and Sandy Leung have jumped over 20 feet while none of the Ducks have jumped over 18-6%. But neither Joyner or Leung has jumped yet this spring, so it is hard to tell what might happen. The situation is similar in the 400-meter hurdles where Leung, the former American record holder and Brenda Peterson (1 00 07) will make their first runs of the season for the Bruins. “How sharp she's going to be we really don’t know," says Heinonen of Leung, who supposedly hasn’t competed in the 400-hurdles for two years. “We don’t know how far she can long jump, and we don’t know how well she can run the 400 meter hurdles. We know that Lexie Miller Beck is tough as nails and that Lisa Nicholson is improv ing and ran a really tough race last weekend," says the Duck coach. "What Leung can do what Brenda Peterson can do, we just don’t know The 400 hurdles will be a key event.” Another treat for the fans could come in the 1,500 meters If the lineup stays pat, the Ducks will send Kathy Hayes (4:14.94), freshman Kim Roth (4:24 0) who is returning from Achilles problems, and Karen Drake (4:25.0), against the Bruins' Linda Goen (4:12 9), Polly Plumer (4:18.1) and Vickie Cook (4:21.1). Goen and Cook haven't run the event this year. “A matchup between Kathy Hayes and Kim Roth against Linda Goen and Polly Plumber would be quite a race." says Heinonen But who steps to the starting line Saturday will depend how the meet progresses. "If we can stay in the meet point wise, we might pull out all the stops in the second half of the meet “If we can get a sweep in an event, the jumps, the hurdles, the throws — if we can go 1-2 in any one of those events — than that will put us in the meet. That could make it real close.” And add suspense to the mystery.
