ASUO sells cakes I for scholarship aid I The ASUO Executive office will use birthday cakes as a fund-raising method to help students finance their Univer sity education. The president’s office, in cooperation with the Universi ty Parents Association, is of fering to deliver birthday cakes for parents to theii children. The money from cake sales will go towards a scholarship fund. The ASUO has sent flyers and order forms to parents and other interested people may inquire at the ASUC office. Students will decide whc receives the money, says ASUO Pres. C.J. Balfe, but nc method to determine reci pients has been decided. The scholarships probably will be based more on meril than need, says John Moore director of the executive coor dinator’s office, who is organizing the project. State and federal governments already provide a lot of money based on need, he says. The scholarship fund will be administered by a board of directors consisting of the director of the executive coor dinator’s office, the ASUO president and persons ap pointed annually by the presi dent. This year's board ap pointees include such people as Harry Esteve, Oregon Daily Emerald editor, and Herb Chereck, University assistant registrar. The board was formed so parents may write off the cakes as a tax deduction, Moore says. A function of the ASUO is use its resources to help students in need of scholar ship money, Balfe says, and selling cakes helps the ASUO accomplish this. Money will not be given to students until the board decides there is' enough to distribute, Balfe says. That probably will not happen until next year, he says. The ASUO will deliver its first cake Sunday, Balfe says. Prices range from $12 to $25 for layer or ice cream cakes. Summer catalogs ready; students must file card Catalogs for the 1983 University summer session are now available in Room 333 Oregon Hall, according to the summer session office. The catalog lists course descrip tions and meeting times for the eight-week session. All students, including those currently enrolled, must file by June 1 an intent to register card which is included in the catalog. Formal admis sion is not necessary, and everyone pays resident tuition. Registration for summer session is June 20, and classes are scheduled for June 21 through Aug. 12. Most classes meet on weekdays, but some workshops and seminars may meet on even ings and weekends. Students may register for shorter courses which begin later in the term on the first scheduled meeting days for those courses. Time schedules for summer session will be available in Oregon Hall on May 15.
