Financial aid form gets mixed reviews A new way of disbursing financial aid on a single registration statement is gain ing popularity among business office staff and students this term. The form lists all loans, grants and scholarships for a student on one statement, replacing a former system which included each financial aid award on a separate com puter card. •‘During the first hour (of registration) the staff was still getting adjusted to the new system, but now everything’s going pretty smoothly,” reported Harriet Merrick, ad ministrative assistant for the National Direct Student Loan program. “Anytime you have less handling of forms to do, you’re going to cut down on time.” “I think it’s working real well,” said Ed Vignoul, Univer sity financial aid director. “I love it.” Students receiving NDSL and Guaranteed Student Loans must stand in line to sign for the loans, but those receiving most major scholar ships and grants can skip the line and go directly to the fees paying window. Some students standing in line for loans Monday said they also like the new single form system. "It’s a lot easier than keep ing track of a million cards,” said Susan Jones, a senior studying marketing and German. But Bill Spellbring, a senior landscape architecture major, said the new statement wasn’t saving him any time. "The line's just as long as it's ever been,” said Spellbring. Losing a registration form with financial aid listed on it is like losing a check, according to assistant registrar Herb Cherek. Cherek said only one lost form had been turned in Monday morning during registration at McArthur Court. "It seems to be a little better this term as far as lost forms,” said Cherek. "But it’s still very early yet.” The registration forms have been used since fall term for fee assessments, but the financial aid listings began just this term. Few file for ASUO positions, deadline near Few students had filed as candidates for ASUO posi tions Monday, although the fil ing deadline is just four days away. Seven students have filed for four offices. Students have not filed for positions on the EMU Board, the Oregon Stu dent Public Interest Research Group board of directors and the Oregon Daily Emerald board of directors. David Gibson, a senior in ac counting and ASUO vice presi dent for administration and finance, is the sole ASUO presidential candidate so far. Gibson’s vice-presidential run ning mate is Sheila Schain, a political science senior and ASUO budget director. Four students have filed for the Incidental Fee Committee, one is an incumbent and two are former candidates. They are Marc Spence, a political science senior and IFC member; Eric Stillwell, a political science sophomore who ran unsuccessfully last year as part of a coalition of candidates called the "Gang of Four;” Dale Penegor, a junior majoring in political science and economics and a former IFC candidate; and Al Steinhaus, a junior in finance.
