Phone 686-4441 Sports Wrestlers third in Pac-10 By Steve Turcotte Of tha Emerald CORVALLIS — The Oregon wrestling team entered this weekend's Pac-10 wrestling championships with what coach Ron Finley called an "outside chance” of winning the team championship But after the second round of action Sunday at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Oregon's outside chance had quickly turned into a nightmare Oregon State captured the team title with 88% points, ASU was second with 81V* while the Ducks finished third with 51 points to end Oregon’s two-year reign on the conference throne Stanford wound up rourin wnn 48V2 points and Washington State was fifth with 46'/2. After breezing through the first round with all 10 wrestlers still alive in the championship bracket, eight Ducks fell in the semifinals, six by loss and two by injury. The big injury to hurt the Ducks was to Dan Cook, seeded first at heavyweight. Cook, who won the conference champ ionship last season and was runner-up the year before, was felled by a knee injury in his semifinal match with Cliff Puls kamp of Stanford "I was trying to spin out of an escape and I just got the knee locked," said Cook of the injury I lldve IICVCI nau anyuimy happen to that knee before — it just locked up.” “It’s really disappointing what happened to Dan," said Finley. “It really takes the fun out of a tournament when a wrestler like Dan Cook gets hurt." But the meet did have bright spots for the Ducks. Oregon 118-pounder Mike Erb captured his third consecutive confer ence championship when he knocked off Rodney Hawthorne of OSU 24-1. ‘‘It ended up being a lot bigger than I thought it would," said Erb of the final score. "I wanted to take it to him right off the bat and then just beat up on him the rest of the way.” After two years of frustration as a runner-up, Rick O’Shea finally won an individual title at 150 pounds for Oregon O’Shea narrowly beat Eddie Urbano of Arizona State 6-4 Three other Ducks, Miles Hancock at 126, Jim Hildebrand at 142, and Cook, earned wild card berths at nationals. Cooks status depends on his knee. FIELD STUDIES ESCAPE (Every Student Caring About Personalized Education) is a field studies program with a three fold mission: 1) To provide students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience while earning upper division credit. 2) To develop student leadership training within the University community. 3) To provide service to the Eugene-Springfield area. ESCAPE places students in agencies in the University and the community No prior course work is required and the only prerequisites are a willingness to learn and a desire to work with people.
