This is ridiculous. The amount and the distribut ion of the incidental fee is de termined not by the ASUO, but by the Incidental Fee Committee — seven students elected each year by the student body. The fees are allotted in public hearings which are, in fact, cur rently in progress SNuFF objects to being labeled "subversive,” "so cialist,” "political" and a waste of money. The ASUO and the University have traditionally recognized that education is much more than Shepard’s narrow definit ion of it — classes Education is diversity, an exchange of ideas and alternate opinions — yes, even those of “minorities and dissenters” like Asians and gays. Education is students learning from students as well as from professors Rather than advocating elimi nating the funding of groups whose views are inconsistent with his, Shepard should find some like-minded students and form Students for a Radioactive Future or the Union of White Anglo-Saxon Heterosexuals Capitalists. The group could develop goals, a budget and request incidental-fee funding Finally, if Shepard really thinks the incidental fee is being used improperly, we suggest he do something about it instead of ranting to the Emerald He should run for the IFC or sup port a candidate with his views, and he should attend the IFC hearings and voice his opinions SNuFF feels sure the IFC members will give those opin ions the attention they deserve Sherri Schultz SNuFF lawbreakers in more creative ways that will save the govern ment money? Would you rather we sent you to jail where you wouldn’t have to worry about school in the first place? You must also remember that a bill must have overwhelming support throughout the nation before it becomes a law; people have to believe in it. Why don’t you do some serious checking around before you assign mor ality on the population in general? After all, rights aren't served to us on silver platters. With every right, every priviledge that living in the United States en tails, there comes responsibility. Shun your idealistic introvers ion and face up to them. Randy Haines freshman, romance languages Suffered It seems as though Randy Shepard has insisted on equal time for bigotry. Well, I have suffered through two of his let ters and now have a proposal for him. Go to the Soviet Union, Randy! You can alter a few phrases in your right-wing fan tasy and be instantly accepted In the Soviet Union, sup pression of dissent and alter natives to ‘official” attittudes is standard In the meantime, he should keep in mind that we re not ready for an idealogical church in America I wish Randy would be honest enough to admit that he's upset by differences in opinion rather than rant and rave about small amounts of money. Andrew Beckwith Disturbed I am disturbed at the priorities the Incidental Fee Committee exhibits in their funding of students groups. It dumbfounds me that the IFC allocates such a large portion of funds for students’ physical health ($56,000 for receation and intramurals) and so little on their psychological well-being. Students funds for the Psy chology Clinic were cut from a meager sum of $442 to nothing Granted, exercise is very important, but so is mental health I suggest that the IFC make a more equal distrubution of incidental fees in considerat ion of the students' whole self The funding of the University Psychology Clinic should be reinstated immediately . Paula Lowden Obliged I am writing in reply to a letter in the Feb 24 Emerald con cerning the law which requires proof of registration with the Selective Service before finan cial aid is allotted. First of all, Manny, you write of all these "rights" we have as American citizens Let me ask — how did we get them? Our forefathers fought very hard (with their lives) to aquire them for us I think we owe them at least enough gratitude to offer to protect their country in case of national emergency Remember also that regi stenng for the draft does not mean you will be called upon to fight iii a modern-day Vietnam.
