Speeches salute black history The Black Student Union will sponsor a week-long series of speeches Law school dean Derrick Bell will ad dress ‘ The WEB Dubois Legacy: A Separatist Strategy in an Integrated Society" at 7 p.m Monday in Gerlinger Lounge Refreshments will be served. Alfred Meyer will lecture on the Soviet Union following the death of Brezhnev, Yugoslavia following the death of Tito and China following the death of Mao. The lecture, which will be held at 3:30 p.m. in 204 Condon Hall, will be followed by a panel dis cussion with Joseph Esherick, University history professor, and Joseph Fiszman and George Zaninovich, political science professors. The lecture is sponsored by the University Russian and East European Studies Center and the political science department. Session offers chance to learn political savvy Free Legislative training for low-income people will be of fered Saturday and Sunday in the Bean student housing com plex The workshop, which starts at 9 a m Saturday, will cover the legislative system and how it works, pubic hearings, contact ing legislators, the state budget process and networking in the community Sen Margie Hendriksen, House Speaker Grattan Kerans and Rep. For more information contact the Clients’ Council at 342-5167 Students offer wide spectrum of compositions A concert of senior and graduate students' composi tions will be presented at 8 p.m. Monday in Beall Hall The concert will consist of a broad spectrum of 20th century chamber music, ranging from "Filboid Stuge," a piece for or gan and guitars by Hiawatha, to "Atlantis," by Michael Harrison for clarinet, flute and piano, to Spanish songs for bass vocals, cello and piano by H Brent Weaver entitled “Canto Ma chado .” The department produces an evening showcase concert each term in addition to senior and graduate recitals and noon concerts, according to Prof Harold Owen. Owen says the concerts can be agonizing for the composers as they listen to their work being performed and wonder if the audience enjoys it Audience members may also be skeptical of the works — more so than if they were hearing Beethoven or Bach who they "should'" like, he says.
