State may up gasoline tax to fund highway repairs SALEM (AP) — Oregon may be forced to raise its own ga soline tax to take advantage of a federal gas tax increase and put hundreds of people to work repairing highways and bridges, the state Transportation Department head says. The state tax is 8 cents a gal lon; an increase of 1 to 2 cents a gallon may be necessary, said Fred Miller, the department head Voters have rejected gas tax increases four times in recent years, most recently last May.
