Alumni honor local legislators The Uni ersity's alumni as sociation held a reception Sun day to honor Senate Pres. Ed ward Fadeley and Speaker of the House Grattan Kerans, both of Eugene. Between 100 and 150 people gathered in Gerlinger's Alumni Lounge to join in the festivities, complete with a crackling fire, a parlor grand piano with a player and eight cases of champagne Alumni Pres. Doug White in terrupted the mingling crowd to present Fadeley and Kerans with University flags to be placed in their capital offices. It's the first time in more than one hundred years that both leaders of the legislature have been University alumni, White said. Eugene and the University have much to be proud ol because Fadeley and Kerans were closely associated with the University, added University Pres Paul Olum. Both men are leading legislators who care a lot, he said. The election of Fadeley and Kerans to the leadership posi tions is fortunate "not just for us, not just for the people in this room who have a close rela tionship with Ed and Grattan, but for everyone in the state," Olum said After each flag presentation, Fadeley and Kerans gave short appreciation speeches. "It’s nice to be among friends,’’ said Fadeley, a University law school graduate. "I feel the challenge of the times is as much as the University could have prepared anyone for.” Kerans, who majored in poli tical science, said the reception is ‘‘something I will cherish a long time, especially with this token (the flag).” "It's a tremendous joy to me as an individual with such a long association with this university to be honored this way,” Kerans said. Kerans said his position as House speaker is “wonderful. The IFC initially approved a $647 budget for the American Advertising Federation. But as program Director Linnea Greenlund left the hearing room, committee member Dianne Ritterband-Ma son reversed her vote on a $97 printing and duplication line item that eliminated the allotment. “I think this is really low-handed," said committee member Bart Hill. The AAF receives too much money for a new group, Ritter band-Mason said. Changing her vote on printing and duplication was the only way to reduce its budget, she said. Programs should be evaluated on their merits and not whether they are new, Hill said. The changed vote caused a 3-3 tie with Hill, Marc Spence and Chairer Betzy Fry approving and Ritterband-Mason, Mary Alice Holmes and Mary Shrauger dissenting. A tied vote defeats a motion. "I think the vote change was arbitrary and capricious," Greenlund said. The committee failed to consider how many students would be affected by the funding, she said The committee tried to pare the program’s $340 advertising allocation to cut the budget to less than $600 but could not agree on an appropriate amount. "I feel over a barrel on this," Hill said. Reducing the budget below $660 is an arbitrary decision, he said. The IFC tabled a decision on the $340 advertising allotment until committee member Jeff Nudelman returns today. The vote eliminated approval of the advertising allocation, bringing the approved budget total to $230.
