No way, you’ll never do it. But go ahead and try. C’mon, c’mon." Not many basketball players expect this brash abuse, and that’s why Oregon’s Donald Dutton does it. “They get stirred up because they’ve never heard that before." says Dutton. “I try to do anything I can to slow down the other team and that usually surprises them. “At the beginning, the other teams usually don’t know what to make of it and have pro blems adjusting to it. “They say, ‘shut up’ or ‘what are you doing, man,' but that doesn’t bother me.” Little seems to bother the freshman from Delaware as he has worked himself into the starting point-guard spot. Dutton has had to learn a new position after playing mainly at off-guard in high school and a new role Now, he must be more con cerned with passing than shooting, something that could have been difficult considering Dut ton was the second leading scorer in Delaware last year. But Dutton says that average, which hovers above 3 points a game, doesn’t bother him. “It’s a change, there’s no doubt about that. But it doesn’t matter to me whether I score. I feel just as good when I make a good pass and Blair (Rasmussen) scores. Hey, an assist means two points and that's what we need if we're going to win." Playing at the point also makes Dutton feel he has to be the team leader, something that he says he never consciously worried about before, but must now pay attention to. “I have to control the team when I'm out there. If I don’t, then everything goes haywire I never worried about that before, but now I have to make sure everyone is where they’re sup pose to be,” says Dutton. He logged 38 minutes against the Huskies and 33 against Washington State last weekend With the added amount of playing time comes confidence says Dutton, and he feels that is one reason for his improvement. "Sometimes I make mistakes and I would look toward the bench thinking, ‘Oh wow, now I’m going to come out,’ but coach (Jim) Haney left me in and that really helps me gain con fidence," says Dutton. Dutton points to the team’s youth, Bain's the only senior, for some of the reasons why the Ducks aren't consistantly winning. “Some people get down on us for not win ning, but we're young and you make mistakes. There’s not much we can do about inex perience except keep playing." The Ducks may be suffering from inex perience, but not enthusiasm with Dutton on the team. "I get out there and I'm excited And I hope the other players on the team get pumped up when they see me all over the other team's point guard. Just anything that will help us win." Wrestlers face Eastern Washington Eastern Washington will be out to roast the Duck tonight when they invade McArthur Court for a 7:30 dual meet with the Oregon wrestlers On the season, Oregon sports a 4-7 dual meet record this year, including a 20-17 vie tory over Portland State last week. ‘‘I really don’t know much about Eastern Washington," admitted Oregon Coach Ron Finley. (AP) — Paul W “Bear" Bryant, the Alabama legend who retired last month as the winningest coach In college football history, died Wednesday of a heart attack He was 69 Bryant, who bid farewell to the game after the Liberty Bowl In Memphis, Tenn , Dec 29, died at Druid City Hospital, where he had been admitted late Tuesday complaining of chest pains Bryant's physician, Dr William Hill, said Bryant's heart stopped at 12:24 p.m. CST Wednesday “We did put a pacemaker through his chest and were able to restore a weak heart beat” for about an hour, he said Bryant was declared dead at 1.30 p.m., Hill said. Only hours before his death, officials at the hospital reported Bryant in “good spirts," with his vital signs stable.
