"He’s an agent for Ronald Reagan " Kerr's talk concluded the two-day Wilderness Symposium at the EMU sponsored by the Survival Center and the Outdoor Program, which included multi-media slide shows and discussions ex amining the use of the Oregon wilderness While Reagan was achieving success with his economic legislation, "he wasn't getting his environmental program passed,” Kerr said His poor conservation record wasn't enhanced when he recently became the first president to veto a wilderness bill when he turned down a bill in Florida, Kerr added The recent Oregon Wilderness Bill that failed to pass in the lame duck session of Congress will be reintroduced, Kerr said. The bill required a two-thirds vote in the lame duck session rather than a simple majority that is required in a regular session The bill fell only 12 votes short, offering hope for its passage in the future, he added The Republican party has changed its ways from the days when it was "once the party of conservation” under Theodore Roosevelt, Kerr said, yet the current administration is not the first to put the nation's wildlands in danger Ronald Reagan is not the opposite of Jimmy Carter,” Kerr said. "These guys are simply in an administration that doesn't give us (conservation groups) a break ” "It was the Carter administration who wanted to put the MX on little railroad tracks and run it around (the Western states) ” Public busses new mall Judging by Saturday's bus ridership, much of Eugene was curious to try out the newly remodeled Lane Transit District mall at 10th Avenue and Willamette Street The day of free bus fares attracted 12,000 riders — an increase of 88 percent over a normal Saturday, says Ed Ber geron, LTD marketing specialist Some of the 18 buses on the road were packed to capacity while others, including those serv ing the Valley River shopping center, got heavy use Bergeron says public re sponse has been positive to the new transit station and revised route system, which uses a colored symbol to des ignate each area of service For instance, all buses go ing to the University will leave from the brown duck station, while all River Road/Santa Clara-bound buses leave from the purple rhododendron sta tion The $600,000 transit station remodeling project included Photo by Mark Pynes Saturday's opening of the new LTD downtown transit statior, featured a day of free bus fares — and a ridership increase of 88 percent. installing lights and protective shelters, widening sidewalks and landscaping the entire area "I think people will be a lot happier about riding the bus now that the transit station has a better atmosphere, ' says Bergeron The old station was plagued with crowded sidewalks on 10th Avenue and the more complex route mark ing system Bergeron says riders on Sat urday seemed well-prepared for the route changes and colored symbols And the bus drivers seemed to pick up on the public's enthusiasm A new customer service center is scheduled to open March 1 in a building on the southwest corner of 10th Avenue and Willamette Street next to the McDonald Theatre Until then, fare tokens and schedule information are available in a back room facing 10th Avenue in that building Bus fares will increase from 50 to 55 cents next month because of increased operat ing costs The increase, which has nothing to do with the temodeling project, has no ef feet on the 45-cent single to ken price or the $18 monthly fast passes '' *Z4e JloAl /hcade, CMU MuSiaL GosdeAt ATTENTION ARTISTS The EMU Recreation Center is con ducting a wall mural contest.
