I letters L Warrant Addendum: I wrote this letter late last term but was unable to find the time to type it up and turn it in until now When I recently read about the untimely death of one of the most prominent members of the RCVB I hesitated to submit this thinking it might be inappro priate. But since it seems he believed strongly in raising one's voice and since his "comrades” seem bent on poli ticizing his death , besides here I’m on his side As a student of philosophy I must profoundly disagree with the RCYB It does not needfully follow from the fact of scarcity and differing degrees of human ability that anyone is entitled to the product of anyone else s labor As a student of political science I find the RCYB disa greeable In light of the lessons of 20th century history one would have to be either power hungry, or a sap of such, or desperate for reform, to accept communist ideology It is so blatantly conducive to the es tablishment of tyranny and to justification for the most op pressive and imperialist mea sures. The political situation in this country is deplorable, but certainly not desperate enough to warrant communism as merly a means to counteract that which dominates. The problem is: In this par ticular case the RCYB is right The continued prosecution of the "yellow ribbon burners" constitutes political respres sion While I was not there when the ribbon was burned, wher the "protest" (I guess) was made, I was there some shor time later at a beer-garden in the same place, the EMU ballroom and watched a three-man jug gling act toss flaming batons, often dropping them on the wood floor, for quite awhile before the director of the EMU took notice and told them to stop Obviously, it would have been ridiculous for anyone to press charges of arson for that Ob viously then too the pursuit of such charges against those who lit there a yellow ribbon is un justifiable, that is, politically motivated Kyle DeBord Ignorance Yes, Todd Weber, defense ignorance abounds Unfortuna tely your article on the subject (Emerald, Jan 19) is only an other example of such ignor ance Weber goes to great pains to point out the failure of previous Emerald letters to explain why the MX is a first strike weapon However, Weber himself does not attempt to answer the ques tion, but instead, by implication, leads readers to believe that the MX is not a first strike weapon. The MX is a first strike weapon for two reasons First because it has the accuracy to strike against a hardened target such as a Soviet missile silo with a single shot kill probability of 99 percent Second, because no basing mode for the MX has yet been devised that will allow it to sur vive a Soviet attack, the MX is a weapon that must either be used first or lost Additionally, it should be pointed out that 100 MX missiles would have a total of 1,000 warheads each with a 99 percent countersilo capabili ty Weber next puts down Charles Gray for not under standing what verifiablity means yet fails to tell his readers that the Cruise missile is unverifiable WHAT CROP CAN BAIL OUT OREGON'S FARMERS'? s. because of its small size and mobility Weber also fails to point out that the low flight path of the cruise makes it undetec table, another dangerous situation that can lead to nu clear war Finally, Weber asserts that the Soviets take civil defense ser iously and trys to prove this by quoting one unnamed source said to be from a Soviet policy statement, and make reference to two articles What Weber fails to do here is point out that other Soviet sources have said the exact opposite, including Soviet doctors on national Soviet television Yes, Todd, I agree, misinfor mation, misunderstanding and 6ER&EN- "M UP To MY ‘ " yjlTH THESE. ^WS LEAKS. Stephen Johnson doctoral candidate, sociology Bicyclists I have procrastinated in sub mitting this letter tor quite some time now, in hope that the si tuation of which I write would miraculously solve itself Alas, it hasn’t, so finally I write Please take heed: this is not written in a spirit of condemna tion, but in a spirit of semi-frus trated pleading It concerns u niversity bicyclists Specifically, reckless university bicyclists I am taking the stand of the pedestrian Don't get me wrong: I am not a self-righteous pedes trian I realize that pedestrians can be a big annoyance to bicyclists I also have no desire to separate the University into two categories — bicyclists vs pedestrians A lot of us get around on both both wheels and feet, undoubtedly I am simply a tad worn out from dodging the care less bicyclist on his 15 second sprint to class Each day I dread that I'll become a casualty of a frenzied rider I'm a very patient person, and I'm not losing that patience, but I do feel as if I'm losing years of my life1 With each near miss, each almost-catastrophe, my heart fails a little more I suggest to bicyclists don't speed around a blind corner, don't speed at all (you may not be able to stop), keep at least one hand on the handle bars, don't chat with anyone behind you. slow down when entering a crowd of pedestrians (some times I feel like a bowling pml), let pedestrians know when you are behind them, leave ample space between you and the pedestrian you are passing and simply be very aware of others I know that everyone is a good bicyclist most of the time, I think that the mam problem Is the last-minute rushes to class Be grateful — It's even slower on foot* I try to do my best in not becoming a hindrance as a pedestrian to bicyclists or drivers and I would sincerely appreciate the reciprocation of that consideration. Rachel Taylor sophomore, music Promises In response to a statement made by Doug Eastabrooks as quoted in the Jan. 11 Emerald Eastabrooks says there is an equal amount of people who think seriously about what he has to say compared to critics who yell profanities and argue " This is either a blatant lie or else these people are more blind than I thought I am aware of the times when a crowd of people have stopped to discuss the finer points of the type of religion Maranatha preaches I am also aware of the many times I have seen them standing on the hill talking their heads off to a group of students that don't pay attention or else they get annoyed and yell profanities I have spent many hours watching the Maranatha speakers This is a habit I have which teaches me much about human behavior And I have observed the students passing with a contused look on their faces, yet they very seldom stop to pay attention The times that I have observed a crowd of peo ple surrounding the preachers, it has been a hostile group ex pressing their anger at having the preacher's loud and dis turbing presence shoved down our throats at every corner I think this is a fairly clear expression of the type of pseudo-religion that is being spit in the faces of the students These people don t mind re sorting to gross distortions of the truth to make their claims look legitimate Not a very Christian way to be1 In essence what I'm saying is that those of you that do listen to this so called truth, should listen very carefully, so that bull doesn’t carry you oft to promised green pastures and leave you in a wasteland of illu sion.
