Sports Paxson: perpetual motion PORTLAND (AP) — In a game filled with one-on-one moves and lightning-quick backcourt players, Jim Paxson has made his career out of constant motion "He is the best player in playing without the ball in the NBA," said Kansas City coach Cotton Fitzsimmons. "I used to think Otis Birdsong was, but I don't think there is anybody in the league right now who is moving on the court without the ball better than Jim Paxson " Early in his National Basketball Association career, Paxson determined he would need to overcome his lack of quickness with constant motion on offense. "If I don't move without it, I'm not going to get the ball,” he said "That's motivation right there There are 10 guys on the court and only one has the basketball. If you don’t move and try to get open, it cuts down on your opportunities I have to use anticipation and movement to make up with my lack of quickness compared to the other guards in the league ' Paxson's name won't be among the leaders in the fan balloting for the backcourt players in the NBA all-star team, although Fitzsimmons and Portland coach Jack Ramsay believe it should be there. "I think the coaches fully appreciate the kind of player he is," Ramsay said "I don't know if the fans do." Paxson and his catalogue of long- and short-range shots have been exhibited in relative obscurity in Portland since he was drafted in the first round out of Dayton University in 1979 He struggled through his rookie season, averaging just 6 2 points per game while hitting just 41 percent of his field goal attempts "I didn't think he was going to make it." Ramsay said But he rebounded with a 17 1 scoring aver age the next year and has improved since then He has ranked in the top 20 in league scoring most of the season, averaging 20 9 points per game and sinking 51 percent of his field goals and 81 percent of his free throws He is the only Portland player to start in all 39 games, leading the team to a 24-15 record "He's having a great year." Ramsay said "His overall game has improved His defense has improved and he's getting at the basket better His free throw shooting shows that He's getting a lot more free throws " Paxson. whose father played briefly in the NBA in the 1950s and whose brother John is a star guard at Notre Dame, takes the lack of national attention in stride "If I was somewhere else, in a bigger city, maybe I might get more attention." Paxson said, "but also I might not be playing for Jack or in a system in which I could excel " The 6-foot-6 guard will enter the option year of his contract with the Blazers next season Paxson, his team's captain and player repre sentative at age 25. said he'd be interested in trying to work out a new contract agreement with the Blazers this summer "If not, I'm willing to go out and test the free agent market." he said Chances are there would be more than a few bidders Damaqed Ducks host Portland State The injury plagued Oregon wrestling team will try and re group after a dismal 35-9 loss to Oregon State Sunday when they take on Portland State tonight at 7:30 at McArthur Court The Ducks will be without the services of heavyweights Dan Cook and Brett Hamilton, and Rick O'Shea who are all out with injuries Oregon will be led by 118-pounder Mike Erb who has the best record on the season for the Ducks with an 18-4 mark Portland’s Frazier meets second ranked Page SEATTLE (AP) - Hard punching Larry Frazier has been in the ring with World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Larry Holmes before — as a sparring partner Now. his dream is to be in the same ring with Holmes again — this time as a challenger for Holmes' title "I've been doing this a long, long time and I don't have much to show for it,” the 6-foot-5 veteran says But, finally. I think it's all going to pay off Frazier, 33. from Portland, is 19-3 with 17 knockouts in a professional boxing career that began in August of 1972. That was 10’? years ago His biggest purse in his 22 pro fights has been $5,000 He doesn't have much to show for all his years in the ring On Saturday. Feb 12, Frazier will get his big chance, though He is set to meet Greg Page, the WBC's No 2 heavyweight con tender, on national television on ABC's Wide World of Sports The scheduled 10-rounder probably will be held in Las Vegas, Nev., says Mike Morton of Portland. Frazier's veteran manager ot the past 2'^ years Promoter Don King is giv ing the Frazier-Morton tan dem $25,000 plus $5,000 for the Page bout ' Don hasn't made us any promises about Holmes, says Morton, but he s there right in front of us All we have to do is get by Page All Don actually will say is. If you beat the No 2 guy. you will make more money than you can ever spend ' " Frazier, formerly of Seattle, fought here last week and scored a lopsided 10-round unanimous decision over Ishaq Husssein of Los Angeles He appeared out of shape at 237 pounds 'Don't worry." promises Morton "Larry will be in great shape for Page We can win it all now and we re not going to let this oppor tunity slip out of our grasp We re going to try to come in at 228-230 for Page Frazier is a native of Ba kersfield, Calif Page will go into the Frazier fight with a 20-1 record with 17 knockouts.
