Lodge raided, evidence seized EUGENE (AP) — Fifteen police officers swept into the Eugene Elk Lodge early Thursday, inter viewed those present, seized some "gambling devices” and left seven hours later without arresting anyone, police said "The officers involved are to make a report and turn it over to the Lane County District Attorney Pat Horton, and Horton will decide how to proceed,” said Eugene Police Capt Bill DeForrest Horton’s secretary said he was in a meeting at a local hotel and would have no comment on the matter. DeForrest said he wasn't sure how many people were in the lodge, but there were 40 cars in the parking lot He said his department obtained a search warrant for the lodge after receiving complaints for 18 months that illegal gambling was taking place there. He wouldn't say what type of "gambling devices" were seized "Evidence indicative of illegal gambling was seized," DeForrest said. "I'm sure there was some money seized " He said that when the officers gained entry," they went to the location in the lodge where they believed illegal gambling was taking place Decision tabled in spraying suit A U S District court judge postponed a deci sion Thursday on a federal lawsuit filed by a coastal valley resident involving pesticide spray ing in the Siuslaw National Forest At a hearing in the Eugene federal building. Paul Merrell requested more time to file an addi tional brief in support of his case against the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of the Interior Federal District Court Judge Robert Belloni gave Merrell two weeks to submit the brief Merrell, a disabled Vietnam veteran, claims the EPA is wrong in allowing the federal Bureau of Land Management and the USDA Forest Service to spray certain pesticides in the Siuslaw Forest region before they can be thoroughly tested for safety. He filed the suit on his own behalf and is acting as his own attorney. Named as defendents in the suit are EPA administrator Anne Gorsuch. Secretary of Interior James Watt. Secretary of Agriculture J R Block and seven other subordinate officials In his suit, Merrell asks that use of all pesticides in the Siuslaw forest be stopped until the federal agencies prepare a single environ mental impact statement with complete test results for all substances Among these are the herbicides 2,4-D. Dicloram and Asulam OSPIRG’s allocation stays put A question of local or state control of the Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group dominated discussion at the In cidental Fee Committee meeting Thursday The University chapter of OSPIRG requested its entire budget allocation be transferred to the state OSPIRG office The committee previously had approved such a transfer for half of OSPIRG's budget but voted 7-0 against the request to transfer the other half of the money Most OSPIRG activities are channeled through the state of fice in Portland, said Carl Vander Zanden, state OSPIRG chairer Because of its centralized operation, costs are cheaper, he said Half of the money should stay at the University to ensure local control for University students, said David Gibson, ASUO vice president of administration and finance, in giving the ASUO Executive recommendation against the request In the past, OSPIRG has not always carried through on promised goals, allowing the money to be spent possibly at other OSPIRG chapters, added IFC chairer Bart Hill said The recommendation comes directly from ASUO Pres C J Balte, said Gibson, adding that Balfe “isn't that adamant about many things But the state office is spending $20,000 here this year, some of that for a full-time paid professional whose salary alone is more than the IFC allocation, Vander Zanden said The IFC allocation is about $10,000 Workshop on El Salvador set for today Roger BurDach. director of the Center for the studies of the Americas, will be featured at a workshop on Central America titled “Revolution in El Salvador and Central America Prospects for 1983 Films on Central America will be shown beginning at 7 p.m today and 10 a m Saturday at 1236 Kinkaid St., wtiere the Eugene Council for Human Rights in Latin America is locat ed Burbach will speak at 2 p.m Saturday on the revolutionary forces in Central America and the Reagan administration's policies on the area.
