Brainv students form Academ
If you have an IQ of 130 or
better or an SAT score of about
1,250, Academ, an offshoot of
the round-table society Mensa,
may be for you, says group
sponsor Daniel Cohen
Academ is part of a network of
forums designed for the ex
change and advancement of
knowledge, Cohen says Mensa
has more than 160 special in
terest groups, including
Academ, dealing with concepts
from astronomy to law to the
Beatles
"It is an open-minded organ
ization that draws people from
age 4 to 94, from welfare
recipients to millionaires and
does not discriminate between
race, religion or belief," Cohen
says
"Academ is part of a growing
nationwide organization for
communication between col
leges that allows people with
different interests and majors to
share their experiences," he
says
The University chapter
formed last year, Cohen adds.
Academ's purpose is to iden
tify and foster human intel
ligence for the betterment of
humanity, encourage research
in the nature, characteristics
and uses of intelligence and to
provide a stimulating intellec
tual and social environment for
its members, he says
Academ is different from
other intellectual organizations,
Cohen says
"It is not dependent upon
high grades or University invol
vement,” he says. "It would at
tract people who do not neces
sarily get involved in school
functions."
To join Academ, a student
must be in the top two percent
of IQ scores in the area, which
Cohen estimates to be 130. A
SAT score of 1,250 or better is
also acceptable
"Probably 5 percent of the
University would qualify for it,”
Cohen says. "But I want to see
how much interest there would
be for it."
Advertising student gets
marketing scholarship
University News Bureau
Advertising student Kevin
Roddy has won a full-tuition
scholarship to a week-long dir
ect marketing educational
foundation program in Danbury,
Conn., this week.
As one of 30 students select
ed from more than 230 ap
plicants, Roddy will receive a
practical introduction to basic
direct marketing and direct mail
techniques under the guidance
of a dozen top practitioners in
the $125-billion direct-market
ing industry.
Topics include the principles
of direct mail success, creativi
ty, mailing lists and testing
Roddy works as an advertis
ing representative for the
Oregon Daily Emerald.
A panel of direct-marketing
executives select institute
scholarship recipients based on
faculty recommendations, the
student's academic standing,
interest in advertising and mar
keting and record of extra-cur
ricular school-related activities
and employment.

one, but we surprised
ourselves," Kouns says
Holmes says she was un
aware the SPA existed when
she decided to campaign until
the group asked her to run on its
ticket Operating openly will
help the group gain more sup
port, she says
Starting early will avoid some
organizational problems, Kouns
says Whereas Greek can
didates can go from house to
house for support, the SPA
must do more legwork to solicit
support, he says
SPA will rewrite its platform
during early winter term, but the
group will stress many of last
year's themes, Kouns says The
group plans to stress that
students “get their money's
worth from incidental fees," he
says
Holmes and Kouns say they
are considering running again
Kouns says there is a better
than 50 percent chance he will
seek the SPA endorsement for
ASUO president, and Holmes
says she may be his running
mate.
If she does not try for an
ASUO position, Holmes says
she will run for re-election to the
IFC
The group plans a February
bake sale to raise money for
SPA campaign printing costs,
she adds
