Ducks gun for road wins By John Healy Of the Emerald Oregon basketball coach Jim Haney hopes his Ducks won't be too ''philanthropic" this weekend when the Ducks em bark on their second road trip of the season, this one a two-game swing along the East Coast In Haney's estimation, the Ducks gave away a win in their last road game, a 46-44 over time loss against the University of California-lrvine “We are going to have to quit being so philanthropic if we are going to have any success on our trip back East to Richmond and Rutgers," says Haney, who has a chemical engineering de gree from the University of Pennsylvania Richmond is 2-1 and Rutgers 2-0 this year The Spiders clipped Oregon 65-64 in Eugene last year on the way to an 18-10 season mark, while Rutgers went to the National Invitational Tournament and finished the year with a 20-10 season record "Both schools have excellent basketball teams," says Haney "We have to play hard and ex ecute, and we need to come home with a victory or two " Richmond, Oregon's oppon ent Saturday night, returns two players from last year's club Bryan Trended Their front line measures 6-9, 6-7 and 6-9, but it has been the play of guards Tom Bethea (6-3) and Kelvin Johnson (6-2) that has spurred the Spiders The pair combined for 39 points in a 68-61 win over Radford Four 30-game starters return from last year's Rutgers team, including senior 6-7 forward Clarence Tillman, who notched 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Scarlet Knights in a season opening win over Farleigh Dick inson The Scarlet Knights depend more on speed than size — their front line goes 6-6. 6-7, 6-9 — as their 88-70 win over Farleigh Dickinson attests to The Scarlet Knights are similiar to Cal-lrvine in the way they push the ball up the court, according to Haney But the Ducks will try to slow down the game Monday night, which they did successfully against Cal-lr vine Haney will counter Saturday and Monday with the same line up he started in Oregon's first two counting games — so phomore 7-0 center Blair Ras mussen (8 0 points, 4 0 rebounds per game), senior 6-6 forward David Brantley (15 0, 8 0). sophomore 6-7 forward Mike Matheson (2.5, 1 5), junior 6-3 guard Gary Gatewood (6 0, 2 0, 5 0 assists), and junior 6-3 guard Greg Bell (10, 15. 4 0 assists). However, Matheson may be spelled by 6-8 sophomore Jerry Adams (4 5, 4.5), who played 23 minutes against Cal-lrvine and responded with seven points and seven rebounds Another Duck who will see a lot of playing time is 6-6 so phomore swingman Bryan Trendell, who is averaging 10 points a game on the strength of his perimeter shooting Swimmers open season at UW meet The Oregon coed swimming team opens its 1982-83 campaign today againt 19 other teams at the Husky Invitational Swim Meet in Seattle The meet, which runs through Sunday, will be held at the Hec Edmund son Pavilion and will fea ture teams such as Wash ington. Idaho. Cali fornia, Montana and the university of British Columbia Oregon will be led by seniors Erik Hughes and All-American Tina Helm, who was fourth in the 200-yard backstroke at last year's meet. The Ducks finished ninth in the meet last year Second-year coach Dan Cole calls the meet a good one, but left the question of the Ducks' strength up in the air “After some good hard training this will give us a chance to see where we are,'' Cole said. "There will be some good com petition and we ll be look ing for some fine perfor mances.” Duck matmen pin Stanford for first win Four Oregon veterans posted big wins Thursday night as the Duck wrestlers broke into the win column for the first time this season, downing Stanford 27-21 in dual meet action at Palo Alto Senior Mike Erb pinned Stan ford's Bert Fukunaga at 4:54 of their 118-pound match, then sat back and watched teammates Rick O'Shea and Keith Miller do the same O'Shea pinned Jeff Hazard to post his second win in as many nights at 158 pounds, while Miller did the same by pinning Scott Dufault at 177 Other winners for Oregon in cluded 126-pounder Miles Han cock and heavyweight Dan Cook Hancock beat Stanford's Bill George 16-4, while Cook recorded his second straight triumph with an 18-10 win over Ed Katz The win raised Oregon's record to 1-2 on the season The Ducks opened the current road trip dropping a 25-18 decision at San Jose State Wednesday night.
