Art/Robert Webb The gift that keeps giving "Give the gift that keeps on giving" is one of the standard lines frequently heard this time of year For most products the phrase contains a certain amount of hyperbole, but in the field of art, the statement rings true A good work of art, be it sculpture, oil, watercolor, carving, print, or even inexpen sive poster, can change as we change, our appreciation for it grow as we grow Listed below are several art galleries generally priced to receive the student trade The galleries are listed from the closest to campus to further out University Art Museum, campus, 686-3027 The Mus eum has two areas which cater to the art buyer The Gift Shop contains unusual, handcrafted gifts: toys, Christmas tree decorations, jewelry, gift wrapping paper, a large selection of cards, including several specialized handmade Christmas cards (many from artists who have had shows at the Art Museum), all of which are moderately priced The Art Museum's Rental Sales Gallery offers woodcuts, oils, wood carvings, pho tographs, acrylics, watercolors, lithographs, monoprints, collages, and mixed media pieces representing the works of nearly 70 living Oregon artists These pieces sell for anywhere from $100 to $1,000, but they also rent out for $16 to $45 for a three month period It's possible to have a revolving art gallery in your own home Art Museum hours are noon to 5 p m Wednesday through Sunday Maude Kerns Art Center, 1910 E 15th, 345-1571 December is Christmas Festival time at Maude Kerns which means the Center is offering several special events as well as the usual fare available in their Gift Shop To begin with, this Friday is their Champagne Opening Festival held from 8 to 10 p m and the admission is EVERYTHING except afwprmfnt Nov. 26-Dec. 12 FABRIC * PATTERNS * NOTIONS* LACE* CLOTHES* MORE (12% off credit card purchases) $2 50. December 3-5 are Green Days at the Center Wreaths, swags, and other greenery will be available to purchase for holiday decoration and gift-giv ing On December 10 the Center will be open until 9 p m As an added attraction, they will have wassail and entertainment The Art Center's hours are 10 a m to 5:30 pm m every day except Fridays when the Center stays open until 9 p m Robert McClain’s Japanese Prints and Supplies. 2380 Spring Blvd . 343-1980 This gallery is rather unique for a couple of reasons; one. it's in McClain's private home, and two, the gallery consists exclu sively of contemporary Japanese prints, mainly wood block prints and a few made by-hand facsimiles His prices range from $10 and up to around $1000 He also has artists' supplies such as blocks of wood and carving knives As he works out of his own home, the hours are very open Just call or drop in Insights Gallery of Fine Arts. 5th Street Public Market, 344-6555 These folks carry posters, prints, lithographs, colorgraphs. originals by nationally known artists such as Gorman and Schurr. and copies They also take con signment works by various local artists The posters run from $4 to $150 without frames Hours are 10 a m to 6 p m.
